Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Bonacorsi.
Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Jennifer Bonacorsi. I am the owner and co-founder, along with my husband Bret of jBloom. Before the days of jewelry, I was a special education teacher and Bret worked in corporate America. We have four amazing daughters that are my Why. When we started having a family, I knew that I wanted to stay home with them. When Bret was traveling, I wanted a hobby for myself. I learned how to make jewelry. I would take old jewelry apart and remake it. What began happening was people were buying my jewelry off of me. This went on for about one year and Bret said, “You should do home parties and let people design their own jewelry and you finish for them.” My neighbor held the first U Design Jewelry party and we never looked back. From that party, the ladies asked if they could sell U Design with me. So we took approximately a year to research direct sales companies so that we could create our own.
In 2004, we launched U Design Jewelry and became a part of the Direct Selling Association. But this model was very craft-oriented and beaded jewelry was beginning to not be the trend in 2010-11. I was missing people that wanted to wear and sell our jewelry but the minute I would tell them I would train them to make it, they were out. Around this time, we had added personalized jewelry and this started to take off. I knew in October 2012, we needed to make a change or we would no longer be able to survive. In 2013, we rebranded and relaunched as jBloom. No more making jewelry. I design the pieces in our catalog. One thing that was important for me to keep was the creativity aspect. I didn’t want to be just another jewelry company. I wanted our pieces to be versatile and something for everyone. Our tagline is “Wear Your Story.” We focus on personalized jewelry that you can put a child’s name, an anniversary date, a phrase, word and scripture on. And recently, we added handwriting and custom designs. So the creative possibilities are truly endless. In addition to the personalization, we have fashion jewelry pieces that are amazing paired together.
We have designers (this is what we call our independent consultants) all across the country selling jBloom in a home party or online experience. We call our parties “Boutiques” because I absolutely love the boutique feel when you walk into one. That one on one vibe, they want to know what you like and don’t like, they make it personal, and ultimately you leave wanting to tell others about the experience you just had. That is what I want a customer to feel when they attend one of our boutiques in-home or online.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say that it was a smooth road, but with every struggle made us stronger along the way. In 2008, when the economy changed, that was very bad for us. Our starter collections were $1500 and $2500. We had a sterling silver company and silver prices were outrageous. So with every piece we sold, we were losing money. In addition, our U Design jewelry consultants were getting burnt out on making the jewelry so we were not growing. That is when I knew we needed to do something different.
In October 2012, I made the decision that I would make every order that came through so that we could add the option for any new consultants that wanted to join could do so with a $199 collection and all jewelry would come made to them. When I relaunched the company to jBloom, we virtually lost all of our consultants with U Design Jewelry because it was more of a craft company. So we had to rebuild. Those were the toughest years we had ever faced. My faith is what I continue to lead on through all the obstacles that come my way. That inspired our theme for 2021, which was “Believe for More.”
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As the owner, I love pairing fashion with jewelry so it all works together. I work closely with my vendors to stay on top of the latest trends. We are known for our personalization but also our high-quality fashion jewelry pieces that we love layering together. I am most proud of helping women succeed. We have designers (consultants) all across the country selling jBloom. And it blesses me to hear the countless stories of how jBloom has helped their family or the piece that a customer designed that tells their story. Our personalization and the amazing group of jBloom designers are what sets us apart. We have a culture here that lifts each other up, cheers each other on and celebrates one another. One of my favorite quotes is, A flower doesn’t compete with the flower next to it. It just BLOOMS.
How do you define success?
Success is different for everyone. For me at jBloom, success for one designer could mean that she had an extra $200 for Target. To another designer, it can mean that she was able to lead a team, earn our rewards trips and incentives. Whatever goal you set out for yourself and meet… that is a success! And your level of success can change based on your confidence and belief in yourself. So my passion at jBloom is to help every Designer reach their definition of success.
