Daily Inspiration: Meet Kalima Shahid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalima Shahid.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Kalima Shahid. I am professionally known as Kay, owner, and founder of Kay’s Kitchen LLC. I am 33, born and raised in St. Louis, MO. I have always had a huge passion for food and cooking. I am what you would call a skinny foodie. Having two growing boys, I would cook and make different dishes each day, so they wouldn’t eat any fast food. I attended Lindenwood University and received my bachelor’s in Business Administration.

Wanting to start a business not knowing what my passion was and being unsure I went back to get a Master’s in Human Resources a year directly after graduating. After receiving my Masters, I accepted a position in a corporate setting. Still want to be an entrepreneur/girl boss. I knew that it was something in me just didn’t know what it was. During the pandemic, I decided to test the water and start selling plates. I figured it was the perfect timing since everything was curbside. I created a menu to post on social media.

My immediate approach was I wanted to create different dishes that you couldn’t find in most restaurants in St. Louis. Trying to bring a different level of food to the Lou!!! Creating unique dishes each week on my weekly menus helped my business grow tremendously! This opened doors to being a traveling chef, catering events, private dinners, etc. At Kay’s Kitchen LLC our motto is to provide amazing food and excellent customer service!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, it has been a very smooth road. Only because… I am distant from this. Providing the community with amazing food and awesome customer service has allowed me to produce a product that everyone loves.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our unique dishes provide our city with various selections that you can not get anywhere. I am most proud of being able to provide amazing customer service and amazing food to our city.
