Daily Inspiration: Meet Katie Marvin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Marvin.

Katie Marvin

Hi Katie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
S&K Interiors, located in the heart of the Central West End, is an innovative interior design company with over 15 years of experience working in both residential and commercial properties in Missouri, California, New York, and Colorado. We thrive on “creating spaces that inspire”. S&K Interiors originally started out as a mother-daughter design duo in 2011. (S&K Interiors=Shirley & Katie Interiors) I have always had a passion for interior design, starting at an early age, I enjoyed moving my bedroom furniture around trying different layouts. My mother had been doing design for many years already. I was following in my mother’s footsteps and teamed up with her to create S&K Interiors
I have an extensive background in project management, general contracting, renovation, commercial and residential design, customer service, branding/merchandising, event planning, managing staff, operations management, color consultations, furniture sales, lighting design, home and office organization, kitchen and bath design.
I enjoy bringing the “new” out of something “old” and putting a personal touch on it.

My mother, Shirley, had been doing design for over a decade before I joined which puts her at now over about 30+ years. She has been a great mentor. She is now retired but thoroughly gets her design cup filled up when I get a new project and if she gets an opportunity for me to involve her lol. I’ve been excited to continue the business and creating a brand that is thriving across the St. Louis area. I want to help bring joy to my clients home or office. I am focused on providing my clients with cost-effective, functional and GORGEOUS spaces!!! My passion for design can be seen with my choices of colors, accents, clean lines, elegant finishes, and other exciting elements that make S&K a one-of-a kind design company.

I am passionate about beautiful design and I am continually trying out new paint finishes, furniture arrangements, room layouts, lighting design and accessories. I have worked in a variety of different design styles, including mid-century modern, contemporary, Hollywood glam, eclectic, Asian, as well as traditional and transitional spaces. I also enjoy a challenge and enjoy meeting new people. I want them to be happy with their spaces and I welcome fruitful honest conversations and brainstorming sessions together so we can get to that point for them. I believe it’s a team effort and I enjoy working as one with my clients. I hope to be a blessing to all that I come across.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road was usually pretty smooth. However, at times working with your mother of course can pose it own set of challenges. lol It can be quite stressful at times, but then can also be quite hysterical. We are the same, but different, of course. I think the majority of our clients thoroughly enjoyed watching my mother and I interact together and would get quite a few laughs during many of our meetings on occasion.
My brother worked for the business for quite a few years also, but we lost him in 2021.
A few challenges came when we took a 3 year hiatus from the business when I moved down south. But now being back in St. Louis for the past 1.5 years-I’ve been ever so blessed with new clients and have been such a joy to work with.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My empathy for my clients is what I think sets me apart from others. My passion for design but also I have a deep passion for caring for other people.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I’m also a caregiver. I’ve cared for my grandmother for the past 20+ years. My grandmother is now 101 years old and going strong. I cared for a friend of mine who was paralyzed and a few others over the years. I use this caregiving quality that I believed was instilled in me at a very early age and in my genes of course from my amazing grandmother, Lorraine, who is my inspiration, in my everyday work with clients. I truly do care and want to help everyone enjoy their spaces more and to feel cozy and joyful in their everyday lives.
