We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Julia López and have shared our conversation below.
Julia , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Excitingly, I started learning the drums at the start of this year. I’m still very much at the “trying to keep a steady beat without accidentally inventing jazz” stage, but it’s been a blast. There’s something really fun about just making a ton of cool beats.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a freelance photographer and videographer passionate about telling stories that feel both personal and universal. To me, photography isn’t just about capturing a moment….it’s about capturing a feeling, a small detail, or a fleeting expression that might otherwise go unnoticed. Filmmaking takes that further by weaving visuals, sound, and narrative into something immersive and layered.
Whether I’m capturing a portrait, working on a documentary-style project, or creating a wedding film, I love showcasing the genuine qualities of people and places. Right now, I’m excitedly exploring projects that look at how our identity interacts with our environment, and how our surroundings influence us and, in turn, how we shape our surroundings. It’s such a rewarding experience because each project feels like a fresh chance to connect with people in meaningful ways, all while playing with different ways to tell stories visually.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is, without a doubt, my mom. She’s always been the kind of person who leads by example, showing me that work isn’t just about getting things done, but about doing them with integrity, persistence, and care. I remember watching her juggle so much, yet she approached everything with determination and a sense of pride. From her, I learned that work can be both responsibility and joy, and that how you show up matters just as much as the outcome.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Phew, girl, life’s gonna throw some real curveballs, but you’ve totally got this.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is connection and authenticity, showing up for people, creating meaningful work, and making sure those around me feel seen and valued. They know I care about turning ideas into something that has a real impact, but also about keeping relationships at the core of everything I do.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I think I would regret not taking risks that scare me, like projects or adventures that push me outside my comfort zone. Playing it safe feels secure in the moment, but I know I would look back wishing I had embraced the unknown more.
