We’re looking forward to introducing you to Espnn Jay. Check out our conversation below.
Espnn, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
One of the best feelings in the world is traveling to different cities and being recognized by people. Knowing I have support in multiple places makes me proud, because it shows that I’m making a positive impact on others. Most of the time, these supporters have seen one of my viral videos and reach out for a haircut, a picture, or even some advice.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a licensed barber based in Florissant, Missouri, with a deep passion for the craft of barbering. This profession has transformed my life in countless positive ways, and I’m committed to using it to impact others just as deeply. What sets my brand apart is the genuine connection I build with my clients. Beyond delivering high-quality haircuts, I take pride in creating a welcoming environment where people feel comfortable, valued, and heard. Many of my clients don’t just view me as their barber—they consider me a trusted friend they can open up to. There’s no better feeling than helping someone regain their confidence through a great haircut that makes them look and feel their best.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I used to believe that success could only be achieved by becoming a doctor or lawyer. Over time, my perspective changed as I found greater success—and fulfillment—through entrepreneurship, particularly in the barbering industry, where I’ve been able to make a meaningful impact on others. Growing up, I was encouraged to follow the traditional path: go to school, get a stable job, and play it safe. While that path works for some, it’s not the right fit for everyone. My journey took a different route. Although I did earn my bachelor’s degree, I’ve always known that barbering is where my true passion lies.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Lack of confidence was once a major obstacle in my life. I often found myself doubting my abilities and questioning whether I could truly achieve my goals. However, everything began to shift once I started reaching those goals and realized that the limitations I felt were all in my mind. Through this journey, I’ve come to believe wholeheartedly that with hard work and dedication, I can accomplish anything I set out to do.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The version of me that the public sees is my authentic self. I don’t live a false life for social media or try to portray an image that doesn’t reflect who I truly am. My friends, family, and clients would all agree that I am one of the most transparent and genuine people they know. I believe in always keeping it real—even when the truth isn’t easy to hear.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I’m on vacation—it’s one of the few times I allow myself to fully unwind and be present in the moment. It’s a chance to step away from the hustle, recharge, and simply enjoy life. I’m truly grateful for these experiences, and I recognize that none of it would be possible without the continued support of my clients. Their trust in me is what makes these moments of rest and reflection possible.
