Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Marie Mayuga.
Hi Ann Marie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began at the University of Missouri–Columbia, where I studied journalism at Mizzou. I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling and communication, so it felt like a natural fit. After graduation, I was recruited by Fleishman-Hillard, which brought me to St. Louis and launched my career in public relations.
From there, one of my clients, GenAmerica Financial, offered me an opportunity to join their team. I spent eight incredible years there, eventually becoming Director of Public Relations. It was a rewarding chapter, but I found myself missing the dynamic pace and variety of agency life. That led me to a small PR firm based out of Kansas City, where I continued to grow professionally.
After several years of working hard for others, I had a moment of clarity: if I’m putting in this much effort, why not build something of my own? In 2008, my husband Ed and I co-founded AMM Communications, and we’ve never looked back. It’s been an amazing adventure—one that’s allowed us to help clients tell their stories, build their brands, and grow their businesses.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We were fortunate to launch AMM Communications in 2008 with an incredible group of clients, especially given the economic climate at the time. But let’s be honest—no road to entrepreneurship is ever truly smooth. In fact, I believe that if you’re not hitting bumps or major roadblocks, you’re probably playing it too safe. That’s more of an “employee” mindset than an “owner” mindset.
The biggest struggles have been personal. Learning how to take care of yourself, knowing when to stop for the day, and finding ways to truly relax—those are ongoing challenges when you own a business. Especially in the first 5 to 10 years, it’s hard to switch off. You have to develop a bulletproof mindset and commit to showing up every single day with grit and determination.
As a two-person agency, Ed and I have had to push ourselves to think bigger and believe that we can compete with larger firms. And we do. What makes smaller agencies like ours so desirable today is our ability to be nimble, creative, and fully embrace technology. We’re able to move faster, adapt quicker, and deliver more personalized service—all while staying efficient and effective.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
AMM Communications is a boutique public relations and strategic communications firm that Ed and I co-founded in 2008. We specialize in helping organizations craft clear, compelling messages that drive sales, build brand awareness, and strengthen internal and external communications. Our clients range from B2B companies and nonprofits to financial services and manufacturing firms, typically with 15 to 2,000 employees and annual revenues between $5 million and $500 million.
What sets us apart is our agility, mindset, and expertise. As a two-person agency, Ed and I are both seasoned practitioners of the PESO Model™—a framework developed by PR thought leader Gini Dietrich that integrates Paid, Earned, Shared, and Owned media. We’re also early adopters of time-saving technologies like Zoom, Doodle, Google Drive, and AI platforms, which allow us to work smarter, move faster, and deliver more personalized service. This combination of strategic insight and operational efficiency helps us compete confidently with larger firms while staying nimble and creative.
We’re known for our work in public relations, content marketing, crisis communications, and executive communication skills training. But what I’m most proud of is our brand’s reputation for integrity, responsiveness, and results. We’ve built a business that reflects our values and empowers our clients to communicate with confidence.
At the heart of our brand is a simple but powerful promise: *Drive your sales. Communicate Better.* Whether it’s media outreach, content marketing, crisis communications, or executive coaching, we help organizations tell their stories in ways that resonate, build trust, and drive measurable results.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking is all about building genuine relationships, not just exchanging business cards. One piece of advice I always share is: don’t start a conversation by asking, “What do you do?” Instead, ask people about their hobbies, interests, or what excites them about coming to work each day. You’ll learn more about who they are—not just what they do—and that opens the door to more meaningful connections.
When it comes to follow-up, be prompt and intentional. If you say you’re going to do something—send an article, make an introduction, or schedule a coffee—do it within 24 hours. We’re all human and easily distracted, but timely follow-through shows respect and builds trust.
Finding a mentor is similar. Look for people whose values and energy resonate with you, not just those with impressive titles. Some of my best mentors have come from unexpected places—former clients, fellow board members, even peers in mastermind groups. The key is to stay curious, be generous, and always look for ways to add value to others.
