Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Kalisiak
Brooke, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I opened Legacy Physical Therapy in January 2009 in St. Louis, Missouri to offer specialized pelvic rehabilitation services to the public. I has a passion for helping people enjoy healthy active lifestyles, restoring dignity and confidence in bladder, bowel, pelvic and sexual function without relying on pain medicines or surgery. My mission is to educate the public about the importance of pelvic health and to help eliminate the stigma around talking about pelvic health issues.
Over the last 16 years, I hav grown the practice from just myself, to now 8 staff focused on providing excellent care to help patients overcome pelvic health issues and 2 clinic locations (Valley Park & St. Peters) We have 5 dedicated pelvic health therapists who enjoy working with all different types of pelvic health patients across the spectrum of life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle to growing a pelvic health physical therapy practice has been creating community awareness that pelvic physical therapy is a treatment option. Pelvic health issues such as bladder leakage, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain are common but they are not normal. Too many people believe that there are no treatment options for these conditions or that the only options are medication or surgery.
Unfortunately, although it is getting more well know, pelvic physical therapy as a treatment option is still relatively underutilized in the medical field. Often when patients bring up these symptoms with their medical providers, they are told that these symptoms are normal because they have had kids, and when they get bad enough, they can try medication or surgery. Pelvic physical therapy is not brought up as an effective conservative treatment option. Because of this, I have found that we have had to spend much time marketing to the general public as well as talking to potential medical referral sources about the benefits of pelvic physical therapy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Legacy Physical Therapy is St. Louis’s premier pelvic health physical therapy practice. We love helping people overcome pelvic health issues, such as pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapses, and bladder issues. We am passionate about getting more community awareness for pelvic health issues. Too many people think that bladder leakage as we age is normal or that painful sex after having a baby is normal. These issues are common but not normal. There are many conservative things that people can do to take control of their pelvic health and it is our goal to help educate people that they don’t just have to live with these problems and that there are other treatment options than just medications or surgery.
As the owner of Legacy Physical Therapy, I am so proud of the team of passionate employees we have at Legacy Physical Therapy. All of our employees are equally as passionate as I am to help people overcome pelvic issues. I love coming to work every day and getting to collaborate with my staff to come up with new ways to help or patients and the bring more awareness to pelvic health issues.
One of our goals is to bring pelvic health education opportunities to the public more. This year we have started a series of free pelvic health education classes that are geared towards educating people who will be going through some type of pelvic surgery to help them optimize their recovery.
