Exploring Life & Business with Ericka Kennedy of Lavender Flour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Kennedy.

Ericka Kennedy

Hi Ericka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been creative and knew I wanted to study some form of art. Throughout my life, I have studied art history, fine art, and even fashion before eventually finding my passion- photography. I started going to school for photography at Santa Monica College in 2019. I initially thought I would be photographing people, but when we were all stuck at home in 2020, I started baking, and that’s when my food photography began. Styling the scene is one of the most important and fun parts of creating a food photo. It has been important for me to find my style as a food photographer and play with different lighting, props, and colors to create a feeling and atmosphere for the viewer. I love to shop for interesting pieces to add to my prop collection, like old silverware and antique plates. It took some time before I found my unique look to create consistently, and I am constantly learning and trying new things.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a bumpy road! During 2020, on-campus classes were canceled, meaning my studio lighting class was taught from home. It was a wild time, but when I look back, I realize I learned so much. Most importantly, I learned to adapt to working in small spaces like our small kitchen by filling it with backdrops and studio lights. Because of this, I can seamlessly work in a small corner of my current living room. Although it was a bumpy beginning, I now love setting up my photo scenes at home.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Lavender Flour?
My specialty is food photography, and I’m known for making the food or drinks I photograph to look pretty and appetizing. What sets me apart is that I find the best use of natural light for my work. Some of my photos are lit with a strobe light, but the style I create for them has an old, vintage feel. Using the natural light coming from a window feels more authentic to me. I’m proud of myself for creating a unique mood and aesthetic for my photos and sticking with it. I am passionate about the art I create, and it shows through my photos. I want to branch out and try new things, and I would love to work with coffee shops, florists, bakeries, and farms. Being new to St. Louis would mean a lot to me to get the chance to work with local businesses in the area.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’ll never forget being on an airplane for the first time. I was about 6 years old, and my mom flew with my brother and me to Oregon to visit my grandpa. I remember that I wasn’t scared; even when there was turbulence, I was laughing and having a good time!
