Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Cameron
Hi Jessica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when I was in graduate school at Washington University. I was taking kickboxing classes at a local gym and I started teaching classes. I discovered my passion for fitness and my passion for helping others learn to love it. After working as a social worker with children with HIV/AIDS and having my three children, I realized I wanted to make fitness my full time career. It was the classic story of making your passion your profession.
I worked at a local boxing gym teaching classes and then slowly started to grow my own personal training business within that gym.
Since then, I have worked with everyone from the UFC welterweight champion of the world to busy moms to middle school students working on self confidence and strength.
It has been a tremendous blessing to be a part of so many amazing people’s lives over the past 20 years helping them discover the emotionally and physically incredible “side effects” of exercise.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Juggling family/ work life has always been a challenge. Wanting to give more and do more but also wanting to make family the priority is a neverending balancing act.
Finding a place to do my work when my gym was a “victim”of extreme flash flooding.
Staying afloat during covid via zoom and group workouts.
My daughter’s battle with cancer
My mom’s paralysis
Staying relevant as Im aging
As you know, we’re big fans of J Core Fitness . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own a personal training business. I provide private and group training in a smaller personal training gym. I have been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. My behavioral health background combined with a wide variety of fitness certifications and experience allow me to work with clients on a deeper level.
My goal is to provide personalized, creative, research based, fun workouts to enhance my client’s lives physically and mentally. I also strive to give back to the community and enjoy hosting fitness fundraisers allowing clients and friends to join together to “sweat for a cause”.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
It sounds cliche but it is crucial to know yourself, know what unique gifts you bring to your clients, know what your strengths and weaknesses are and work with them to bring something unique, meaningful and important to your clients.
Get clear about who you are and what you bring to people.
Learn and grow constantly.
This industry is always evolving.
In the beginning of the journey, I struggled because I thought I needed to be a certain way, be the typical trainer/“drill sergeant”. I floundered until I accepted who I was and realized my style may not fit everyone’s needs but would be the perfect style for others.
