Exploring Life & Business with Joseph Martin of The Caffeinated Accountant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Martin.

Hi Joseph, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in accounting by accident really. I was working in a restaurant at night almost seven days a week and was looking to finally make a change from the nightlife. A position opened up during the day in the office so I gave it a go.

I started as an office manager/accounting assistant. I eventually replaced the main accountant and stopped working nights. I was a late bloomer in college at 25 and met someone and things progressed from there. Using my latest experience, I moved on to a nonprofit after graduating. I worked under a very smart CPA who lit a fire in my accounting career path. I moved around a little bit learning about different industries as I progressed my career and positions.

10 years into my accounting career I now had a wife and two great boys who I wanted to spend more time with and not work for someone else away from home eight plus hours a day. I again found myself working day and night to get things off the ground and moving while taking any clients that wanted to have me. I have since found my niche in the cannabis industry. Today I am almost completely self-sufficient in my business but am loving every minute of it. I can make my own schedule and work with who I want from anywhere I want. My most recent project was an unplanned renaming which turned out to be a great time to rebrand. I am now “The Caffeinated Accountant” bringing two of my passions together in one title. I continue down this path to help small businesses in what I think is one of the most important parts that owners either don’t understand or don’t have time for.

I know that wasn’t that brief but if you had any other questions I could answer to narrow that down, I would be ok with it too!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been easy. It starts with how you get clients. I wasn’t sure I should pay to advertise or do the footwork myself going business to business. I received a sign one day when our grass guy asked me if I knew any accountants to do his financial work because he simply didn’t like to do it and would rather spend his time building his company. From there I took the cheaper route of reaching out to companies that were in need of accountants.

Finding the time to do the work while still working full time is one of the toughest parts being the provider of my family I was not able to totally quit and pursue this dream. My family has to do things without me at certain times and I think about whether is it worth it some days. I have to remind myself to keep going or else I wasted all that time and energy for nothing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Th Caffeinated Accountant?
I am still a one-person firm at the moment but I am in hiring mode. I take pride in being a firm that is more on the personable side and can answer questions or calls without billing per minute.

I specialize in Bookkeeping, Accounting & Tax for the Cannabis industry. I serve dispensaries, cultivators/growers, distributors, and transporters. I am an open book if anyone has questions and wants to talk. I am a lifelong learner and love to try out new things.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are hiring some help and teaching the skills I have developed and learning with my team. I would like to learn and grow with people and provide a stepping stool to their own careers. I plan to go and visit seminars and conventions around the US and network more.
