Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Lovell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Since my early high school years, I have been interested in injury recovery. When I grew up, I wanted to do something that was going to help people and to make a difference. I studied exercise science in college and have always been on the lookout for new ways to help people recover. My father discovered cryotherapy at his work and I did some research. Cryotherapy started in Japan for people with arthritis and fibromyalgia and then athletes brought it to the United States to aid in their recovery. As I learned more, I realized St. Louis had a huge need and market for this new form of therapy. For the first time, everything in my life kind of came together, and my family and I started Celsius Cryotherapy in a mobile unit traveling around to local gyms to spread the word about cryotherapy and let people experience all the benefits! We opened our brick and mortar location in November 2018 and still going strong! Since then, my brother has gotten married and moved on, so I have been running Celsius, learning, and growing for the past two years with the wisdom and business support of my father.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It takes a lot of patience to start a business from the ground up. Patience in the process, patience in the people, patience in yourself. Things started moving faster and more efficiently when I started trusting people. I thought I had to do this adventure alone and that’s not true. You have to surround yourself not only with positive people but people who are going to continually build you up, help bounce ideas off you. The Cryotherapy community is very helpful across the country. You can learn a lot by just reaching out to other cryotherapy businesses to learn what has worked or not worked for them. You are going to have your highs and you are going to have your lows. The balance is going to come from the strong, confident, uplifting clients who walk in the door.
Then of course, like all other small businesses COVID made an impact and added a struggle. As COVID started, we decreased services and added more safety precautions. We went from doing about 60-90 services a day down to about 20-30. We went into lockdown with everyone else and after reopening things remained slow. We had to shorten hours and reduce staff. We wanted to make sure our clients stayed safe so majority of our members put a pause on coming into the studio. We saw a decrease in new clients as people were struggling to spend money or try new things. Since the vaccines have rolled out, we have seen an increase in appointments and hope to be back to 100% by beginning of June!
We’ve been impressed with Celsius Cryotherapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am in the people business wanting to make a difference. My goal is for clients to walk out our door feeling better than when they walked in. Whether you are an athlete, a mom, a couch potato, grandpa, or average joe, Cryotherapy has benefits for everyone. It has become very popular with athletes to aid in their recovery needs. Athletes enjoy cryotherapy because they feel it reduces the inflammation and swelling. Not to mention they see that cryotherapy speeds up their recovery time from injuries and tough workouts. We have a lot of grandparent aged clients who have found a lot of relief in cryotherapy for their joint and muscle aches. In addition, we have a lot of clients who use cryotherapy to help alleviate their skin conditions such as acne, blemishes, eczema, psoriasis, and more.
Cryotherapy is the next phase of wellness and fitness. Over the last ten years, fitness and boutique health has exploded. People are noticing more the importance of their body and health. More and more research is pointing towards your need recovery to have an active lifestyle. It doesnt take a lot of manpower to do cryotherapy. It’s a business where we get to help people, see growth, and change lives.
We offer Cryotherapy, Normatec Compressions therapy, and Infrared sauna. Cryotherapy is my favorite for sure. I have been most surprised at how quickly cryotherapy works for people. There is an instant relief for a lot of chronic pain and suffering. Lots of tears of joy and hugs from clients who suffer from chronic pain feeling some relief for the first time in a long time. A lot of people are skeptical at how standing in a cold chamber for 2-3 minutes could have so many benefits. I was skeptical at first as well. I am just an average young woman. I did not think I needed fixing by cryotherapy, but it has changed my life. I have seen so many people feel the same way.
Normatec Compression feels like a massage, there are leg, hip and arm attachments. They use compressed air to massage your limbs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery. The pulsing action mimics the muscle pump of the legs and arms, greatly enhancing the movement of fluid and metabolites out of the limbs after an intense workout. The Infrared sauna uses infrared rays to heat your body as opposed to a traditional sauna which is heating the air. These rays penetrate the skin several inches deep to reach and oxygenate your tissues. Along with this oxygenation and increased blood flow, your body is forced to work harder and sweat more, this increases your heart rate thus burning more calories. During this time, your body will flush toxins from your system, rejuvenate your skin and activate your natural metabolic process. This creates a more “honorable sweat” instead of just having the air heated. Benefits include: Enhances metabolic process, decreases blood pressure, alleviates arthritis, chronic muscle, and joint pain. Helps balance out the body’s levels of cortisol, your body’s primary stress hormone. Helps purify your skin by eliminating toxins from your pores and increasing circulation, and anti-aging benefits
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I thought I had to do this adventure alone and that’s not true. You have to surround yourself not only with positive people but people who are going to continually build you up, help bounce ideas off you. The Cryotherapy community is very helpful across the country. You can learn a lot by just reaching out to other cryotherapy businesses to learn what has worked or not worked for them.
My Father David Lovell deserves all the credit. He was the one who found out about Cryotherapy and at a family dinner asked if anyone was interested in starting a new adventure. He is the brains and the wisdom of the operation. He has started multiple small businesses across the country and was excited to have his children involved this time around. He jumpstarted Celsius Cryotherapy and my career.
