Exploring Life & Business with Meagan Cooperman of Cooperman & Co. Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Cooperman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I knew I wanted to be an interior designer from a very young age. As far back as I can remember, I was constantly rearranging my bedroom and envisioning new ways it could feel. My grandparents were incredibly influential in nurturing that curiosity—my grandfather was a wallpaper hanger in his retirement years, and my grandmother was a seamstress. They indulged my ideas, letting me change out my walls often and even create custom drapery. Having the freedom to express myself through my environment was one of the earliest building blocks of my love for design. Art classes were always where I felt most at home. I could completely lose track of time, and that sense of immersion naturally led me to pursue interior design as a degree. While still in college, I began working for a local designer who had recently returned from New York City. That experience became incredibly pivotal. He was working at a very high level on large estates—projects I didn’t even know existed at the time—and I was suddenly exposed to an entirely new world of design.

I quickly grew from intern to assistant to his right-hand person, learning not only about design but about the business as a whole. I was introduced to showrooms locally and in New York, Chicago, and London, traveled for photo shoots, and gained firsthand experience in how a design studio truly operates. After about four years, I moved on to a firm with a very different aesthetic—more modern and streamlined—which I deeply connected with. That’s where I really came into my own as a designer.

At that firm, I began taking on my own projects and clients, working on new builds and renovations, and gaining a full understanding of the design process from start to finish. I developed a deep appreciation for our local trades—drapery workrooms, metalsmiths, stone fabricators, tile installers, contractors—and learned how essential that collaborative relationship between architect, designer, and contractor is. When those three roles are aligned, the results are incredibly successful. Those long-term, highly collaborative projects are what I love most. I had always wanted a strong work-life balance so I could be present with my daughter, which delayed starting my own firm. But eventually, everything aligned, and I decided to take the leap and launch my own company last year.

Starting my studio has been an incredibly rewarding experience. By that point, I had a very clear vision of how I wanted to operate—how to support clients, keep projects organized, execute efficiently, and make the entire process feel seamless and thoughtful. While I certainly had to deepen my knowledge on the business side, years of managing complex projects, personalities, and scopes gave me confidence in building something intentional and client-focused. That philosophy is also why I named the firm Cooperman & Co. Interiors. I truly believe the people you work with and surround yourself with are essential to success. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to build a talented team (my “Co.”) and network that supports my vision, and I’m excited about what we’re creating together.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest obstacles has been identifying who the right fit clients truly are for us. Early on, it’s tempting to say yes to every project to gain experience and momentum. But I’ve learned that not every designer is the perfect match for every client—and that’s okay! I’ve refined our process to ensure we align with clients who appreciate our approach. We are very transparent & it’s a bit more work on the front end for both parties but is has allowed us to develop a thoughtful way to assess mutual fit, ensuring both sides thrive in the collaboration.

As you know, we’re big fans of Cooperman & Co. Interiors. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Cooperman & Co. Interiors is a luxury interior design firm specializing in new builds, full home renovations, and everything in between. We love taking a project from concept to completion by working closely with our clients from the early planning stages through the final details. Because many of our projects span months (and often years, especially with new construction), truly listening is at the core of what we do. We want our clients to feel heard every step of the way, and we take pride in translating their vision through our design expertise and thoughtful execution. I’m supported by a small but mighty team that keeps each project organized, moving forward, and seamlessly executed. A big part of what sets us apart is the internal structure we’ve built—it allows us to be efficient, respectful of our clients’ time and investment, and incredibly hands-on throughout the process.

While there’s a common thread in our work—layered textures & patterns, a mix of new & vintage—no two projects ever look the same. Each home is designed to reflect the people who live there, which is something I’m especially proud of. At the end of the day, our goal is to exceed expectations while making what can be a long list of overwhelming decisions feel enjoyable and manageable. We want our clients to love the process just as much as the finished space.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m passionate about mentorship in the interior design field, particularly in supporting young women. I’ve seen far too many firms with a sink-or-swim mentality, and I reject that. Everyone deserves thoughtful training, an understanding of our processes, and a seasoned designer to guide them through the nuances of this industry—so they have a real opportunity to succeed. My vision for women at C&Co. is not to hit a ceiling, but to grow into the designers they aspire to become—and to receive full credit for their contributions. My long-term goal is to foster a space where emerging designers can shine—with the support of in house procurement, project managers, & drafting.
