Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Walehwa
Hi Tiffany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Felicity Counseling was once just a dream I held close to my heart as I worked tirelessly to find a way to share my gifts and create a safe, healing space for Black women and individuals from marginalized communities to begin unpacking the weight of generational trauma that still lingers today. My vision was to help others not only heal but discover how to cultivate joy and true felicity in their everyday lives. I immersed myself in learning from agencies that served on a larger scale, all while holding onto the hope of building something more personal — a space where my unique approach to healing could shine and where I could empower other therapists to do the same.
Today, that vision has come to life. We are now a small but mighty team of four therapists, specializing in trauma-informed care and weaving these techniques into our practice to help individuals break free from the pain that has kept them bound and step into a life rooted in felicity and peace.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of building Felicity Counseling has been anything but smooth — and truthfully, it still isn’t. What many people don’t understand about the mental health field, especially when working within the healthcare system and insurance networks, is the significant financial strain that comes with providing care.
One of the biggest challenges we face as a small, private practice is the reality of delayed or denied reimbursements from insurance companies. There are times when we go months without receiving payment for services we’ve already provided, and in some cases, we never receive reimbursement at all. This creates a major financial burden for mental health providers, especially those who are committed to serving communities that are often overlooked and underserved.
For us at Felicity Counseling, this challenge is even more complex because we intentionally strive to maintain a balanced caseload, offering services to individuals from all walks of life, including those with limited financial resources. Mental health care should not be a privilege; it’s a necessity. But when the financial structure of the healthcare system makes it difficult for small practices like ours to stay afloat, it forces many providers to either limit who they serve or risk closing their doors altogether.
Our mission has always been rooted in accessibility and healing, especially for Black women and individuals from marginalized communities who often face additional barriers to quality mental health care. So, while navigating these financial obstacles has been incredibly difficult, we remain committed to finding creative solutions to keep our doors open and continue showing up for our clients.
It’s not just about running a business, it’s about showing people who have been overlooked and silenced that they deserve care, healing, and felicity. And we will continue to fight for that, even when the system makes it difficult.
As you know, we’re big fans of Felicity Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Felicity Counseling, our mission is to provide compassionate, inclusive, and effective mental health care to individuals from all walks of life. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where our clients can embark on their journey towards healing and self-discovery.
Our Vision is to be a beacon of hope and a leader in the mental health sector, known for our innovative approaches, commitment to client well-being, and unwavering support for marginalized communities. We aim to break the stigmas of mental health care and promote a society where seeking help and emotional support is normalized and encouraged.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that often surprises people who know me or are familiar with my work at Felicity Counseling is that, beyond my passion for mental health and healing, I am deeply committed to advocacy work. I have a heart for supporting causes that extend beyond the therapy room, including standing up for human rights, being a strong ally to the LGBTQ+ community and advocating for the rescue and protection of stray animals. These causes are personal to me because I believe that true healing and community wellness come from creating spaces where all beings — both human and animal — feel seen, safe, and supported.
