Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Williams
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2022, I felt inspired to start a socially conscious business that aligned with my passion for helping homeless cats find forever homes. After learning about cat cafés and their success in boosting adoption rates for local rescues and shelters, I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue. I immediately began researching what it would take to start this unique business, visiting several cat cafés for inspiration. I also reached out to cat café owners for their insights and became certain that this was exactly what the Saint Charles community needed. With the support of family, friends, and the community, Cat Zen Café and Lounge was founded and opened its doors on November 25, 2022.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We were fortunate to secure a prime location in a highly sought-after area shortly after deciding to open our cat café. Once we had our space, we worked closely with state and local city officials to ensure full compliance with all licensing regulations, ensuring a smooth operation. The high foot traffic in our area has significantly contributed to our business’s visibility and growth. Additionally, the warm and supportive response from our community has played a crucial role in our success.
Cat cafe’s are a fairly new business model that not many people know about. One challenge we continually face is educating customers and members of the community about the cat cafe concept, what we do, and how we help support rescue cats by increasing their chances for adoption.
However, one of our biggest challenges has been marketing and expanding our social media presence. While we’ve made strides in reaching our local audience, establishing a broader online presence remains a key focus as we continue to grow. We are committed to overcoming this obstacle by enhancing our digital marketing strategies and engaging more actively with our audience online.
We’ve been impressed with Cat Zen Cafe and Lounge, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cat Zen Café and Lounge is more than just a cat café—it’s a unique blend of a relaxing social space and a dedicated mission to help homeless cats find forever homes. We specialize in creating a warm and welcoming environment where guests can enjoy quality coffee, snacks, and the company of adoptable cats. Our café is known for its serene atmosphere, where the well-being of our feline friends is always the top priority.
What sets us apart from others is our deep commitment to animal welfare and our community-driven approach. We’re not just a business; we’re a place where people can connect with animals in need, learn about responsible pet ownership, and potentially find their new best friend. Our location on Historic Main Street in downtown Saint Charles has allowed us to gain significant exposure, and the outpouring of support from the community has been instrumental in our early success.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of the positive impact we’ve had on both the cats and the people who visit us. We’ve been able to facilitate numerous adoptions totaling about 200 adoptions to date. We want our readers to know that when they visit Cat Zen Café and Lounge, they’re not just getting a cup of coffee—they’re supporting a mission to make a difference in the lives of animals.
We offer a unique experience where guests can relax, recharge, and engage with adoptable cats in a peaceful setting. Whether you’re looking to adopt, unwind, or simply enjoy the company of cats, Cat Zen Café and Lounge is the perfect place to do it.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe that luck and being blessed go hand in hand. As a minority female born into poverty, the odds were stacked against me from the start. However, I refused to let these challenges define me or limit what I could achieve in life. I became the first person in my family to graduate from college with a four-year degree and worked my way up to serve in several leadership roles in my career as a social worker. Owning a business has always been a lifelong dream, and I feel not only lucky but incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to open a business that aligns with my passion for caring for and helping rescue cats find their forever homes. My heart couldn’t be fuller.
