Hakiim on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Hakiim and have shared our conversation below.

Hakiim, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day I of course take care of hygiene before I operate fully then I’ll get something on my stomach, lately it’s been smoothies since I cracked the code on how to get them to taste delightful. I’m pretty much a slow paced mover in the morning but eventually throughout that time I’ll pray then get to hearing what’s new out or tap in to instrumentals.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m personally my own brand when it comes to creating music and recording. I get inspiration from peers to the big leagues and myself with that. I test out many sounds to see what fits my sound/brand as an artist and continue to push my music with performances and festivals. I started my own festival named Rage Islands a little over a year ago (July 5th, 2024) to be exact. Even though I am an artist myself I book other acts to come join me at Rage Islands to experience something that doesn’t cost a fee. I personally want to change that part of the culture and provide a nice platform for artist to feel welcomed and recognized in a genuine manner. I make sure to book a sound man to control the sound (my dad), Dj Code-Zero which is very experienced with sound engineering. It’s only right to keep it in the family. Right now I am working on planning the next rage islands and also a project for women currently. I don’t want to say too much but it will be a unique tracklist from the norm of what I do usually. I hope to get that complete before winter.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father Code-Zero taught me a lot about work from just seeing him work non stop from a regular job to a successful business owner of many. Neve complained always ahead of schedule and prepared. That’s the perfect example of what i try to model my work ethic like. Also my mother Mill is just as a hard worker no matter what she was right by his side taking on the business with my father and they now have businesses together. My parents are my influence with work and they installed a lot in me more than they know.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I can give “almost gave up” stories for days and days unfortunately. I think every human has faced this time and felt that maybe I should switch careers or paths, I just look at those times as obstacles and tests. We have nothing on earth that’s 100% confirmation that we are in the field that’s best for us so I recently leaned more on faith and going from there and not overthinking the process or comparing and that’s helped me get away from almost giving up.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Good question… it’s a version of me if I’m in that mode or vibe so sometimes yea hahah majority of the time I’m chill but I feel on stage being chill won’t keep people engaged so I use the energy I have. So it’s me but I be wanting to chill a lot of the time on a regular day.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel it’s nothing on earth that is 100% confirmation before it happens. I wish it was but it’s not. You can feel something is right but what shows that you are in your purpose before your purpose shows you that you are in it? If that makes sense.

I really wasn’t told to do what I’m doing but I had influences and suggestions.
