Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Mobley.
Asia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got my start in media by working as an advertising manager/student writer for The Forum Newspaper at STLCC-Florissant Valley. While there, I fell in love with the art of storytelling and did several internships at media companies such as Karen Civil and RESPECT Magazine.
I’ve always been known as the “go-to-girl” for just about everything pop culture, so I took the skills I learned from my internships and launched my own blog called Rare Radar in 2016. It initially started off with just me posting music but my peers championed me so much that they wanted to join as contributors and we’ve been growing ever since.
We now cover an array of topics such as music, sports, fashion, and even highlight entrepreneurs and creators through the #OnOurRadar series. By stepping into the editor role and managing a team of creatives, I’ve gained a better sense of my purpose by becoming a mentor and allowing Rare Radar to be a platform for those that need it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, the journey has been amazing thus far. I’m not going to lie and say everything has been perfect, but I will say that with me having my own platform – our fate relies on my hands. I like the feeling of knowing that because it keeps me motivated.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rare Radar is an urban pop-culture platform created to keep echo boomers up-to-date with what’s happening in the fashion, music, art, and entertainment industries.
We live in a world where everything is so normalized, at Rare Radar we report a wide range of trendy news, along with providing in-depth features on an up-and-coming artist who embodies rarity, ambition, and innovation.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned from the pandemic was that it’s okay to bet on yourself. Be free…be creative!!! Nothing in life is promised so while we’re here we might as well make the best of it.
During the shutdown, rather than staying at home being bored – the Rare Radar team and I got super creative with our content. We hosted virtual parties, trivia nights and built a community of over 8K on the Clubhouse platform through our Lemme Put You On & HuSTLers Hub Club.
We were named one of the top 5 trivia clubs on the platform. I’m just grateful that we were able to be a source of happiness during such a dark/scary time. That’s our biggest goal.
We’ve now taken several trips together and become a little family. When I reflect on things, it’s crazy how everything has worked out. I just want to shout out to my friends/peers for even wanting to be a part of my little platform. (Lol) Means the world to me.
