Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Matthews.
Hi Bobby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Jennings North County St Louis. It being a low-income neighborhood, for lack of better words it was pretty rough.
For example, when I was 10, i would walk home from school and there was a aggressive pitbull that roamed the neighborhood.
I was terrified of it. My mom & several others called the police, but no help was given. It would always chase me home day after day. Till one day I got tired of it. Left with no choice, I wrestled & fought the pitbull out in the middle of the street. It lasted about a whole 3 minutes. It got some blows in, but I came out on top. Never again did that dog chase me home.
When I was 12, I was bullied for an entire week by some kid who wanted to fight me as a right to join some dumb gang. That time period was a very troubled time for me and I just wanted to be alone. No matter how many times I turned him down to fight, he continued to pressure me. From that Monday till Friday I did my best to avoid fighting till he left me no choice. I defended myself and won, but that’s not the lesson here. Its when we were both placed in the back of cop car and he began crying asking for forgiveness that i truly realized that everyone hurts. Everyone is experiencing pain of some kind.
Good or bad, those memories & experiences have built me to become the man I am today and left me with one goal: to be a champion of community.
At a young age, I realized the importance of making due with what was first given to you and providing back where you can.
I saw first hand the outcome of not giving & receiving help in a world where most things aren’t free. From families & friends fighting, killing each other over money & greed, to people dying in the street. I experienced the agonizing, heart-wrenching results of generational poverty. It sickens me even to this day.
Imagine you have a single corn kernel. If you were to plant that kernel, it would blossom after months to at least 100x the original. You plant at least one from that hundred and now you have system of abundance. If you chose instead to take or burn through every kernel produced then you’re left with nothing. This operates alongside the Laws of Abundance
Our society is built upon taking. In fact, we take pride in it. We focus on just how much money, resources and social value that we can obtain. Growing up in a community where a lot of people went without the basic necessities to life, I quickly realized the importance of receiving help & giving back.
Seeing this at young age, I’ve always wanted to fight back against this overwhelming tide of pain. I knew I couldn’t do it alone. That’s why I created Matthews Digital.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far the journey has been pretty sweet. Starting my own business & brand has been nothing short of a learning experience. Community & humanity seems like relic concepts within modern capitalist society. I am happy to be able to do something that bring me joy and a more fulfilling life. Everyday I am learning new ways to incorporate my vision of community within corporate America, a place where it seems to not commonly belong.
