Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Baird.
Hi Madeline, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Baird Cookie Co. in 2023, but the path to cookies started long before that. I’m originally from Oregon, and at 19 I joined the Air Force which took me all over, from stateside to overseas assignments. My last stop was North Carolina, where I met my amazing husband, Spencer!
We eventually settled in Marthasville, MO- his hometown, and not long after moving, we found out we were expecting our first baby boy. That’s when I decided to completely shift the plans I thought I had and embrace something I’d always dreamed of: becoming a stay-at-home mom.
While raising our now two little boys, I picked up cookie decorating as a hobby and instantly fell in love with the creative process. I never thought of myself as especially artistic, but I’ve always loved making things and cookies quickly became my favorite outlet. What started as a way to unwind from the beautiful chaos of motherhood turned into a full-time business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, the journey has been pretty smooth overall because I’ve had so much encouragement along the way! I spent a lot of time practicing and improving my skills, and once I finally started gaining some confidence, I shared my cookies on social media. I wasn’t expecting much, but the response was incredible from friends and family asking if I sold them, which gave me the inspiration of turning this into a career.
I never imagined owning my own business, but I decided to take the leap, and here I am. One of the biggest challenges has been battling the feeling of whether my work is “good enough.” There are so many talented decorators out there, and it’s easy to question how you fit into such a unique and competitive market.
Because cookies aren’t a necessity for an event, I’ve made it a priority to continually grow my skills and push myself creatively. My goal is to offer designs that feel special, personal, and worth choosing!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Baird Cookie Co.?
Baird Cookie Co. is all about creating custom decorated sugar cookies that are just as meaningful as they are delicious. My main specialty is custom decorated sugar cookies, but I also offer cookie cakes and am working on expanding my menu with a few new treats I’m really excited about!
One of the biggest things that sets my business apart is how truly custom each order can be. I actually design and make my own cookie cutters! I sketch the design in Canva or Procreate, print the cutter on my 3D printer, and then bring it to life through baking and decorating. It means my clients can get cookies that are uniquely theirs. I’ve also invested in an edible printer, which opens the door for printed backgrounds, logos, photos, and so many creative possibilities.
What I’m most proud of, though, is that I was able to build something meaningful while still being present with my boys. Balancing motherhood and a small business isn’t always easy, but being able to do something I love while contributing to my family has been the biggest blessing!
At the end of the day, I want readers to know that every cookie is made with intention, creativity, and care. Whether it’s a big event or a small celebration, my goal is to offer designs that feel personal, special, and worth remembering.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I really love STL and the surrounding areas. One of my favorite things about living here is how many family friendly activities the city offers. Places like The Magic House, the Zoo, and the Aquarium make it easy to plan fun day trips with my kids, and we’re never short on things to do. I also really enjoy the incredible variety of food in the area. There’s always something new to try.
If I had to choose something I like least, it would probably be the hot summers. I’m not a big fan of the heat, but aside from that, I’ve really enjoyed everything the city has to offer!
