Hidden Gems: Meet Shana Jones of Keep Pushing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shana Jones.

Hi Shana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I been serving my community for most of my life. If you ask my mom, she will tell you I started in 1st grade. My grandmother use to always take care of the neighborhood and it didn’t matter who you was she use to make sure you ok. So that’s my foundation. When I move here to St Louis in Dec. ‘2017 I knew I wanted to make a difference. I registered two business my One Stop LLC (March’ 2018) and Keep Pushing Inc (Oct’ 2018). As I work to build a strong foundation, I wanted to make sure that I could be a leader in the community of change. Oct 18, 2018, I held the first Family Reunion for the Unhoused at 1520 Market St. We had a grill, DJ, kid zone, free shoes, free clothing but most of all we had over 2- agencies that was out giving resources to our unhoused community. At that point, I realized that I really wanted to make a difference. Oct’2019 I had to make a hard decision and that was stepping out on faith and trusting God. See I been living with Lupus for over 15 years. When I work in the corporate world, I put in so much time that it was a wearing and tearing on my body and I was always in the hospital. So, Oct. 18, 2019 I walk away from my job and committed 100% into Keep Pushing Inc. Now if God would have told me that we was going to be in a whole pandemic I probably went made the move I did. But God. Keep Pushing Inc was in full force. Through all the pain, heartbreaks from losing so many family members and friends at one time all I could do is think about my grandmother. So, because of that the Grab N Go Table was born on April 3, 2020. I believe that our community was hurting bad and I wanted to turn my pain into something great so 7 days a week 12 hours a day I set a table out to offer food, hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, and diapers to our community. We start with one table and over time we had 12 tables set out in my driveway. For 18 months we ran the Grab N Go Table 24/7. As of today, we now have two locations. One at 2055 Walton Rd Overland MO 63114 which is also known as Keep Pushing Inc Headquarters. We also have a space at 5822 Gravois Ave St Louis MO 63116 which we share space with STL Mutual Aid as a community hub. We now serve over 3,875 families between the county and city. We have rolled out 5 different programs to help our community. I have decided to run for council in my ward in Maplewood, Mo.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road. It was hard very hard. It was time when I didn’t want to go on. It was morning that I thought I couldn’t serve my community. How when every other day I was getting call that someone else has passed away. But I kept on pushing. People will come in my yard hurting; some was ready to give up. So, at that point, I made up my mind that broken pieces can come together and make a whole. With me having Lupus it was and up and down roll coaster. In and out hospital and 2 surgery we didn’t miss a beat when it came to our community. My family took so many hits and I had to be strong. My faith keep me and alive. My children kept me breathing. But most of all the love I receive from my community, the support I received from my community I keep Pushing.
