Hidden Gems: Meet Thomas Kauffman of Elite Spine Plus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Kauffman.

Hi Thomas, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started with my parents. Coming from a Hispanic family, your parent’s dreams tend to feed your dreams and at some point, our dreams became my goals. As I mentioned, I come from a Hispanic family, we moved to the US back in 2003, I was thirteen at the time. We first settled in Mission, Texas where I completed eight through eleventh grade. In 2007 my father was promoted and we moved from Texas to Missouri. I graduated from Kickapoo High School in 2008 and attended Missouri State University that fall looking to complete my undergraduate studies in Cell and Molecular Biology. Having my fair share of athletic injuries, I knew I wanted to do something within the sports medicine realm, I just didn’t know what. By my junior year at MSU, I had shadowed physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons and a few general practitioners, and even tho I like what they were doing, I wasn’t in love with their profession.

In 2013, I graduated MSU with a BS in Exercise and Movement Science with emphasis in Biomedical Sciences. I became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA as part of my exit exam and shortly after, I started coaching at a local strength gym. Within a year, I was managing a fitness center and coaching on the side when I met a good friend of mine whom introduced me to the area of sports medicine through chiropractic. Shortly after, as I was looking to expand my knowledge and experience, I was accepted at Logan University. I began classes on the Fall of 2015 and graduated in 2018. On February 2019, I accepted a position with a doctor in the area, sadly it turned sour and within six months, I left the company. It took me two months to figure out what was going to happen next. After discussing it with some friends and getting in contact with the right people in September 2019, I opened the doors of EliteSpinePlus as an Independent Contractor. In January 2021, EliteSpinePlus became an official business and I would no longer call myself an Independent Contractor.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, it sure hasn’t been a smooth road. Having a job and operating a business are two different worlds. From learning the financial lingo to filling out paperwork, paying taxes, and making sure the business runs smoothly, it has been a learning experience. This is something most entrepreneurs/small business owners don’t realize. In school, I was told that I would be wearing a lot of different hats once I opened my own practice, they weren’t lying. Going into business truly opened my eyes at how little do we learn about personal finance, business finance and entrepreneurship during our earlier education. Even in college, the general education required courses do a poor job at it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Elite Spine Plus is not your average Chiropractic office. Sure, we utilize the adjustment as a tool, but most of our treatments involve soft tissue load management principles, patient education and individualized movement plans. We believe patients that play an active role in their care are more successful than those who don’t. Unlike other chiropractic offices, we don’t sell lifelong treatment plans, we don’t x-ray (or image) patients without probable cause or without a thorough history and examination, and we definitely don’t use fear tactics to get the patient to sign up for treatment.

At Elite Spine Plus, we believe every individual is an athlete to a degree, and therefore their care will be different to a degree. We provide a cost-efficient, result-driven, evidence-based treatment to meet the patient’s needs and help them overcome their pain and improve their health and performance.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
This is a tough question as there are many qualities and characteristics that are important for my personal success and that of the business. However, I would like to say that out of all them I would like to place transparency at the top of the list. I have consulted and spoken with a variety of patients and individuals who have been misguided in their treatment plan. This is the reason why we don’t sell treatment plans. We encourage our patients to become active participants in their treatment plans to come up with attainable goals and expectations. We know that each person is unique and therefore may not respond to certain treatments or a specific time frame. We find that this is just as important as the treatment as it sets the intention of the plan.
