Inspiring Conversations with Dave Candy of More 4 Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Candy.

Hi Dave, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I own a wholistic chronic pain & physical therapy practice in Manchester, MO called More 4 Life that helps women age 40+ overcome chronic nagging aches and pains without medications, injections, or surgery so they can stay active, mobile, & healthy. I never saw myself owning a practice or working with that population of patients. Here’s how it happened:
I’ve been a physical therapist since 2008. Having been an athlete in high school, I initially wanted to work with athletes, but soon after graduating from PT school, I found I got a lot more fulfillment out of helping people do things that really matter – such as playing with their kids or grandkids or staying independent in their home – rather than helping high schoolers get back on the field on Friday night. At the same time, I found out a lot of the things that I learned in school worked for some people but didn’t work for everyone. So I became more interested in learning how to help people that others couldn’t help.

So I went through a 2.5 years post-graduate fellowship program as well as additional training in dry needling. Around that time, I started seeing that the way I liked treating people didn’t always “fit” in the traditional hospital-based or corporate practice.

When I moved to St. Louis in 2017, I decided to join a private practice, but they were soon bought out by a hospital system. Not wanting to go back into a system, I decided to start my practice in 2018 so that I could spend the amount of time with people that is needed to help more “complex” patients who suffer from chronic pain. In my practice, I usually spend an hour one-on-one with patients, which I could never do in one of the more traditional settings.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Being in a new market with no prior contacts, it took time to build up my caseload. St. Louis is a very “small town” inside a big city, so it took some time to develop relationships with customers and referral sources.

We’ve been impressed with More 4 Life, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At More 4 Life, we help women age 40+ overcome chronic, nagging aches and pains without medications, injections, or surgery so they can stay active, mobile, & healthy and get More From Life.

We pride ourselves in help people with chronic pain who have failed other types of treatment (medications, chiropractic, other physical therapy, massage, or even surgery. A lot of the way we do this is just taking the time to listen to people and hear their whole history without jumping right into treatment or prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach. We also work with people as partners, helping them to meet their goals. It’s a very person-centered approach rather than a disease or condition-centered approach.

Our core values are CARE – compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence.

We try to make those core values evident in everything that we do.

What are your plans for the future?
We’re looking to grow and add additional providers and services within the next year.
