Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kezia Jackson.
Hi Dr. Kezia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Healing Spaces Psychological Services LLC has evolved so much since 2018. What started as a part-time, solo private practice has become a group practice with seven employees and counting. I initially went into private practice to create a safe and inclusive space for Black children to receive competent, trauma-informed services. Since then, our services have expanded to provide individual therapy to adults, couples therapy, and (soon-to-be) group therapy. At our core is a desire to provide trauma-informed services, particularly to Black people and other people of color. You are safe, valued, and matter at Healing Spaces Psychological Services.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a group private psychology practice requires dedication, time, and resources. Expanding the business, particularly during a global pandemic, took work. Overall, one of the most significant challenges I have faced is my need for formal business training; as a psychologist, my expertise is in providing therapy and psychological support to clients. However, running a business requires a different set of skills and knowledge I did not have when I started. I had to learn about marketing, finance, and management to ensure the success of my practice. This required me to seek resources and take courses to develop my skills to run a successful business.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
Healing Spaces Psychological Services LLC is a Black-owned (and principally operated) group psychology practice of caring, compassionate, and trauma-informed providers eager to help clients meet their goals. We provide comprehensive, quality, and inclusive psychological assessment, therapy, and training to members of the St. Louis community, particularly those in minoritized populations. I am proud that we are a business that values individuals’ differences and cultures; we strive for equity and inclusivity.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I have truly learned the importance of trusting the process, which involves embracing uncertainty and not having control over what happens next. As someone who lives with anxiety, it can be unnerving to wait to relinquish control. However, it has also been liberating to let go of the need to know exactly how things will unfold and instead focus on the present moment and the steps that can be taken right now. Overall, this lesson has helped me develop greater resilience, adaptability, and confidence in my business, my team, and my ability to navigate challenges and achieve my goals.
