Inspiring Conversations with Gerald Fletcher of G Trains Dogs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald Fletcher.

Hi Gerald, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Firstly how I started, over six years ago, I drove two hours away from where I lived to pick up a husky from what I later found out was a puppy mill. After picking NiKlaus up and driving him home, I soon realized several weeks later that he required training after getting hit by a car(he’s fine). This was when I contacted a dog training company to help train him. A year later, I decided to join the company and become a professional dog trainer. After two years with the company, I decided to part ways because there was a difference in philosophy regarding training the dogs. Shortly before leaving, I moved to New Orleans, where I stayed for three years. Finally, that brings us to Saint Louis, where I’ve been living since February, and I have to say that the level of dog inclusivity is amazing. I’m loving the city so far and can’t wait to start meeting all the dogs as I’ve been volunteering at the APA locations in Brentwood and Olivette(definitely shout them out because they do amazing work). Those are the cliff notes; though the journey is much more detailed, I did the best that I could do!

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Not a smooth road, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it! I struggled to come to terms with what type of trainer I wanted to be in contrast to what type of trainer I was taught to be. When I came to this part of the journey, it was quite enjoyable.

A trainer can be summarized in two popular phrases:
1) Train the dog in front of you
2) There’s more than one way to train a dog

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As you can surmise from the name, my business is a dog training business. I focus on building better bonds between dog and owner to create a functional, harmonious, and enjoyable relationship. I specialize in behavioral modification of fearful and aggressive dogs, those are two separate things, and I wish not to conflate them. What sets me apart from others would undoubtedly be my passion, I’m sure many trainers out there are more adept at training dogs than I am, but if we’re talking about passion, I can stand toe to toe with anyone. What I am most proud of is a tricky question because I have yet to spend much time building my brand. Ultimately, I would like to be known as a guy who helps dogs become their best selves and be involved in more aspects of their parent’s lives as long as they can do so! I want people to know that my services are all-inclusive, and what I mean by that is when I show up to help you train your puppy, I only quit once the job is done! For April, I’ll be offering a complimentary session for anyone interested. Any dogs that come through a rescue, their parents receive 25% off automatically.

Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
What makes me happy is being around Dogs, of course, but also being around people passionate about helping dogs (shelters, rescues, vets, etc.). I genuinely enjoy what I do, and the joy I get from helping dogs is indescribable.
