Today we’d like to introduce you to James & Jennifer Johnson.
Hi James & Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
James: I started Prestige Janitorial Services of MI LLC over a decade ago. My wife Jennifer has always worked alongside me to help grow the business. We are both Flint Michigan natives. The janitorial industry is a lot of hard work. Then on top of that we were raising two small children together in the Flint water crisis.
However; today Prestige Janitorial of MI LLC has now expanded across Michigan. We are very proud of what we have built together.
Jennifer: Today we have a team of 15 employees and several commercial clients spread out across Michigan : This includes schools, large manufacturing facilities, and other commercial businesses. Many companies are closing because of the pandemic; including cleaning businesses, and we are still growing and expanding. https://www.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
James: No, not at all. This industry has no glitz and glam even when you are doing well. I only had a little money to start this business, but we stayed resilient. It was all on us for years. There were many stressful times. There were times I wanted to give up. But I’m glad I didn’t.
Jennifer: It was tough for us initially because we both come from “humble beginnings,” and we did all the cleaning, marketing, ect.. ourselves. We have yet to receive funding help like loans, or grants. Some people receive help from family/friends to help them grow but that is far from our story.
James: When we needed to hire people during the pandemic, we faced even more struggles to keep up.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
James: We strive for consistent quality cleaning at Prestige Janitorial Service of MI LLC. We are a family owned and operated commercial cleaning business servicing several Michigan counties and beyond. With 10 years of industry expert experience, we are still growing and taking on additional clients. We have an unmatched level of customer service that we provide to all our clients, big or small. Jennifer: Prestige is dedicated to providing an excellent commercial cleaning service; and we also partner financially with local charities and organizations that support families, women, and children in need. Because of this Prestige Janitorial Services of MI LLC recently received an Art of Achievement Award for Minority-owned business of the year from the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce! This award goes to a small business creating a positive impact in the community.
What does success mean to you?
Success for us is never giving up and also building something that started in our mind. When things got hard for us, no one was going to fix it for us. So we didn’t waste time complaining; instead, we found strategic solutions to problem solve. Starting a business is not for the faint-hearted. We have made several sacrifices to get where we are today.
Also success for us is being able to “defy all odds”, because there was more going against us than for us to succeed.
