Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamieson Crane.
Hi Jamieson, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated college from Columbia College with a degree in business Administration and sports management. Out of college i had no idea what i wanted to do. I had a few friends working at a inbound call center making decent money so i figured i would give it a shot. about 2 months in i realized that was not for me. I wanted to do something that would not only help people but i also wanted a job where i could leave a lasting mark on the community. I quit that job with no other job lined out, I told my parents i would work at McDonalds if i had to if it meant i didn’t have to work in a call center again. Upon looking for jobs and submitting countless applications i got an interview with a local insurance agent. I had several friends in the industry and talked to them about how they liked their job, all had great things to say so i took the job working under an agent as a producer. about 3 years working as a producer for an agent i was able to learn so much from him and i am beyond grateful for him. but the progression to get my own agency was way down the road, even after being a top producer for the company in the st louis area. After realizing it would potentially be years before i get my own agency i took a leap and a pay increase to a physician staffing company i started with this company around October of 2019. it took a few months to get going but around February of 2020 i was really starting to make good money and had several doctors working for me. When Mid-March rolled around and covid hit everything stopped in the physician recruiting world, all elective surgeries are cancelled and no one was able to travel. I saw the writing on the walls with this and realized it could cause a major disruption so around June of 2020 I left that company. I knew at that point i wanted to be my own boss and own my own business but i wasn’t sure where to start. I contacted a few guys that i know that worked at Shelter Insurance and one of them hired me to work under them as a producer, this job lasted a week because I was hired to take over my own agency. The agency i was hired for was a scratch agency (starting from 0 policies). When i finally started in September of 2020 i hit the ground running. I was in networking groups, meeting with realtors, and loan officers weekly. I joined the local Rotary Club to get involved with the community. I did everything i could to become a recognizable name in the local community. I gave away multiple scholarships to high school students at local schools, along with adopting families for Christmas! I did everything i could think of to be a part and to help the community. After 5 years of hard work i am one of the top agents in my district and beyond grateful for the opportunity
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
absolutely, starting my own business when covid was in full swing was not an easy task in itself. it made networking and being a part of the community challenging as most events were postponed and everyone was fearful of face-to-face contact.
Also i was out of my office for around 6 months due to a fire in the unit next to mine, during this time i had to get creative and thing outside the box to gain new clients as i was unable to use my storefront.
