Inspiring Conversations with Kaitlin Millender of Art Mill Collective LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlin Millender.

Hi Kaitlin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Even when I was younger, it wasn’t just something I did for fun. It was something that helped me process life, express emotion, and feel grounded in who I was. I originally pursued art seriously and was accepted into the Savannah College of Art & Design in 2013, but life took me in a different direction, and I ultimately followed a path into science instead.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and later my Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Oregon State University. For nearly a decade, I worked as a scientist studying and protecting the natural world, while still creating art in the background. During that time, art became even more important to me, not just creatively, but emotionally. It became a source of healing, resilience, and self connection.

In 2019, I began teaching painting as a side hustle, and I quickly realized something powerful. Watching other people reconnect with their creativity felt just as meaningful as creating art myself. I started seeing adults walk into class convinced they weren’t artistic, only to leave surprised by what they were capable of. That experience was addictive in the best way. It felt like purpose.

Over time, that side hustle grew into something much bigger. In 2025, I officially launched Art Mill Collective full time, combining my love of teaching with my passion for wellness and personal growth. Today, Art Mill Collective is a traveling art instruction and event business based in central Missouri. We offer paint parties for adults and kids, private events, and immersive wellness art experiences that blend yoga, sound healing, and intuitive painting.

My work is heavily inspired by nature, travel, and the vivid colors of the Earth. From diving in the ocean as a PADI Master Diver, to hiking through Machu Picchu, standing in the shadow of the Pyramids in Egypt, and exploring places like Glacier National Park and the Arizona slot canyons, those experiences have deeply shaped my artistic voice and continue to influence my style.

At the heart of everything I do is a simple belief. Creativity belongs to everyone. My mission is to create spaces where people can loosen perfectionism, reconnect with their inner child, and feel confident expressing themselves, whether they’re painting for the first time or rediscovering a passion they forgot they had.

Art changed my life, and building Art Mill Collective has become my way of giving that same freedom back to others.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I spent a long time doubting myself and questioning whether I was capable of building the life I truly wanted. Even when I had talent and passion, I struggled with confidence and often felt held back by my past.

Art was the one constant that kept pulling me forward. It gave me hope during my lowest points, peace when life felt overwhelming, and a reason to keep believing in something beautiful. Creating became a way to heal, to reconnect with myself, and to remember that life could still hold joy and meaning.

Starting my business also came with its own challenges, like learning how to be seen, putting myself out there, and trusting that people would value what I had to offer. But each time I taught a class or watched someone light up because they realized they could create something, it reminded me why I kept going. Art didn’t just help me survive. It helped me come back to life.

We’ve been impressed with Art Mill Collective LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Art Mill Collective LLC is a traveling art instruction and event business based in central Missouri, serving communities locally and beyond. I specialize in creating fun, welcoming, and confidence building art experiences for people of all ages and skill levels. My services include adult paint parties, kids paint parties, private events, community workshops, and seasonal pop up classes. I also offer immersive wellness art experiences that blend yoga, sound healing, and intuitive painting to help people reconnect with themselves through creativity and presence.

What sets Art Mill Collective apart is that my classes are not just about copying a painting. They are about learning approachable technique while also giving people the freedom to make the artwork their own. I focus heavily on helping students overcome perfectionism and fear of making mistakes, because I truly believe creativity belongs to everyone.

I’m also proud that Art Mill Collective is rooted in both artistic skill and emotional experience. My background in science and environmental work influences my deep love of nature, and that inspiration shows up in my artwork and class themes through bold color, texture, and movement. I want people to leave my events not only with a painting they love, but with a sense of confidence, peace, and joy that they can carry into their everyday life.

I am most proud that Art Mill Collective represents freedom. Freedom to create, freedom to play, freedom to explore color, and freedom to express yourself without judgment. My goal is for every student to feel safe, encouraged, and supported, whether they are painting for the first time or rediscovering a creative part of themselves they thought they lost.

More than anything, I want readers to know that Art Mill Collective is about making art accessible and meaningful. It is a space where creativity becomes both a skill and a form of healing, and where every person is welcome exactly as they are.

How do you define success?
I define success as building a strong, supportive community and creating spaces where people feel safe enough to try. To me, success is helping others break down fear, perfectionism, and creative barriers, and watching them realize they are capable of making something beautiful. If I can bring joy, confidence, and the freedom of art to people of all ages and backgrounds, that is true success to me.
