Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Betts.
Hi Kyra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Prior to becoming a doula, I was a corporate trainer, working in hospitals training an EMR system. My specific module was Labor and DeliveryThat was my first real exposure to the discrimination and biases in healthcare as I was not a mom yet. I was actually disgusted with some of the treatment that I witnessed so I went home one day and did a simple google search to see if this was just how it goes, sadly it was. I learned about the Maternal Mortality crisis and how it was worse for Black women and I wanted to help. I learned what a doula was and knew that was my next step. I am now a Doula and Lactation Consultant. I also host a web show called the Doula Report where we help to educate the community about pregnancy, birth and parenthood.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The transition from corporate training to birth-work was easy mentally and emotionally but kinda difficult physically and financially. You do not become a doula to get wealthy, you do it for the love and the money hopefully comes along. Another major struggle is my community not valuing a positive birth experience for our birthers. I have had multiple women whose mother or partner talked them out of hiring a doula. It makes me sad actually.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the owner and operator of The Divine Flower Child Doula and Birth Services. I provide full spectrum doula services as well as childbirth, lactation and infant care classes. I try to serve as a one stop shop for my clients. I provide all of these services to provide a better continuity of care for my clients. I served over 30 families in 2021 and that’s a major accomplishment coming off of maternity leave myself. I pride myself on being fun, friendly and knowledgeable.
What were you like growing up?
When I was younger, my mom would call me a mad scientist. I was always trying to create something or “discover” something. I loved to dance, I took classes all throughout my childhood. I was also very independent! Like nearly to a fault. I basically potty trained myself and taught myself how to cook. I still have that type of independence too!
