Inspiring Conversations with Lexi Boyle and Beverly Patterson of The Cordial Canine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Boyle and Beverly Patterson.

Hi Lexi and Beverly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Cordial Canine is a dog training company owned and operated by Beverly Patterson and Lexi Boyle. Combined, we have been training dogs for 20 years. Bev started her training career in New York and worked with and learned from some of the top trainers in the nation.

Lexi graduated college with a degree in biology with the intent to work in the field of conservation. She worked with multiple big cat rescue’s and a wild life reserve in South Africa before getting an apprenticeship under a dog trainer at a pet resort.

This is where our story really begins, as this is when we first met. We ended up working at the same company for several years. During that time we both learned a lot about the Pet Care Industry and more specifically the training world. Throughout the years we saw things that we would like to do differently, which is when the idea of The Cordial Canine began to develop.

We wanted to offer something different to the Saint Louis area. A place where we could bolster relationships between dogs and their families, and build a stronger community through the love of dogs. We wanted a place where people could feel comfortable as soon as they walk in the door. For us it’s not just about the dogs, it’s about the humanity and compassion we can find for each other through a shared experience and love for our number one animal companion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many small businesses starting out, there have been many bumps in the road. While we are excited and committed to sharing our model with others, turning our passion into a sustainable business has required a great deal of learning, patience and perseverance.

Leaving the security of our jobs to start this was one of the scariest things either one of has done. We have gone from having a steady income to an uncertain future. We’ve also had to learn how to fill many different roles; trainer, business owner, marketer. Finding the balance and learning how to develop a business has been a difficult task but extremely rewarding.

While we know there will still be many challenges ahead we know that we can face anything because of the amazing people who continue to support us. Time and time again we are astounded by the generosity and support we have received from our community. There are now words that can express our gratitude. So despite the hardships that we may face, we are committed to succeed and repay all those who have continued to believe in us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At The Cordial Canine, we specialize in dog training that prioritizes the relationship between dogs and their people. Our mission is to help humans and their canine companions better understand each other with effective training techniques.

We offer Day Training and Private lessons designed to support dogs of every age breed and background. From basic obedience to reactivity and behavior issues, we meet every dog-human team where they are and help them move forward with clarity and confidence.

What sets us apart is our modified day camp. We strongly believe that day camp is not meant for every dog and should be entered into with the individual in mind. Our priority is to advocate for each dog and their specific needs. We are committed to creating safe, respectful environments for both dogs and their humans.

Brand wise, we’re most proud of the trust our community places in us. Many of our new clients are referred by our supporters who have trained with us for many years. The confidence they have in our model encourages us and propels us forward everyday.

If there’s one thing we want reader’s to know, it’s this: dog training is about building a relationship with our canine companions and being able to live together comfortably. We want to build cooperative, joyful bonds with our dogs that will last a lifetime.

What makes you happy?
We love working with dogs and their owners and seeing that moment when understanding clicks between a dog and their human. Seeing the breakthroughs; calmness around other dogs, engagement with the handler, a puppy learning to settle. These are small moments that represent trust, growth and communication. While we love to see these victories with our human-dog teams, we also have things outside of work that brings us true joy.

Bev is extremely artistic and finds great joy in painting, drawing and being in nature. She is extremely inquisitive and loves learning about anything and everything.

Lexi is more of a home-body who loves to hang out with her family and husband. She loves reading and caring for all of her plants.
