Hi, MaKaylah. We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been fascinated with old photo books and images because of the many stories 1 picture tells. I picked up my first camera as a teenager and never put it down. I love capturing joy through my lens and freezing time with an image. I started my photography company in 2017 (Kay- Raé Photography LLC) & have been running a successful business ever since. I specialize in event, portrait & headshot photography but am not limited to those categories. The mission and vision for my photography business is to satisfy all of my customers through high-quality images that bring joy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has been a very smooth journey, but it could have been better! Since starting my photography business in 2017, I have had many life events that caused me to take a break from 2019 through 2022. Due to the pandemic, the consistency of my business declined as we were all on lockdown. Events were being canceled, parties were being canceled, and even graduations were being canceled, which meant that my photography services were not needed, causing my business to slow down. I love to be creative with my camera, but my passion for my work faded during that time, and sadly, I closed my business down. I have had several requests to capture events that I declined due to a lack of motivation post-pandemic. After much thought and consideration, I recently took a chance and said “YES” to capture a masquerade birthday bash I had so much fun at! Since then, my passion for my work has been reignited, and I have not put my camera down. Photography is an art form that I enjoy while simultaneously making my clients happy through images! Usually, when we look back at photos of ourselves, we can remember exactly how we felt at that moment, and I am so happy that my job is to freeze time for just a second with a simple click of a button that produces a beautiful image. I want my clients to reflect on their images to remember how happy they felt! I will never put my camera down again.

We’d love to hear about your fond memories from growing up.
I enjoyed spending time with my family and summers with my grandmother Alice Prechard and cousins. My fond memories during those summers include running toward the ice cream truck with a dollar in hand, hoping to get the best flavor! Living in the moment was easier back then, and I miss those days! A memory of me as a child pertains to my business and would have to be of how I would go into our garage to find a purple container where we kept thousands of photos of our family. I would spend hours sitting on the living room floor looking at the images, looking at the expressions on the faces in the images, and just admiring the photos in general. Usually, kids would much rather play outside, which I did, but I also loved photographs and found joy in looking at pictures. That was the catalyst for me becoming fascinated with cameras and later starting a business.
