Inspiring Conversations with Megan Barken of Megan Barken LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Barken.

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a therapist really started as a troubled teen. I struggled with depression and a substance use disorder as a teenager and had some really amazing professionals show up for me during that time. It was through my own experience of therapist and treatment that I decided I wanted to become a therapist for others in my future! Although the road was bumpy (I also had an unplanned teenage pregnancy), my support system helped carry me through the hard times and cheered me on. After received a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Saint Louis University, I was off to the races! I started by career at a non-profit agency called Places for People. I worked as a case manager with many diverse individuals with a variety of mental health needs. I then spent some time working at Concordance Academy of Leadership, an agency focused on helping individuals from prison to re-integrate successfully back into the community. I am so passionate about their mission and loved my time at Concordance. In 2020, I started to explore the idea of going into private practice. With the help of my mentor Anne Adams, I started my private practice in December 2020. It has grown into a busy thriving practice, and I love what I do! I work with a variety of ages and mental health needs. I see people for a variety of challenges from depression and anxiety to grief and trauma to relationships and life transitions, and more.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have to say, my professional practice has been smooth, with lots of unexpected twists and turns! I went into the field thinking I would work with teenagers struggling with substance use. However, my experience at Places for People and Concordance Academy led me in a completely different direction! I loved serving this underserved populations and have a special place in my heart. But ultimately, I still felt compelled to have my own practice and serve an even broader community. Having a private practice has allowed me to see people of many different ages, backgrounds, mental health challenges, and treatment goals. I feel honored to walk alongside each and every one of my clients.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Megan Barken LLC?
My business is a private practice of one practitioner. I see individuals of different ages and mental health needs. Right now, I am happy to be serving a wide population with many diverse needs! I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, substance use, and relationship issues.

What does success mean to you?
To me, my success is defined by my peace of mind and internal contentment. At the end of the day, I need to feel good about what I am doing in this world and how I am serving others. When I serve others well, the finances, business, logistics, etc. will fall into place. When I focus on providing quality care to my clients, they see change, and I get to celebrate with them. I can wake up each day feeling happy about the mission of my business and the small changes I am making each day.
