Inspiring Conversations with Sydnie Rushing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydnie Rushing.

Hi Sydnie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
It all started back in 2018. Alton had just won season 3 of the Small Business Revolution tv show and there was a hometown pride simmering in Downtown Alton. A friend of mine who lives in STL was coming across the bridge for a fun day trip to Alton and wanted to know, since I had been living in Alton, what things she should do while she was there.

I gave her a great list of things but there wasn’t really a place to shop for clothing. Having been in retail for nearly a decade, shopping is kind of my thing. I was working in STL so I had all the options all the time but I hadn’t thought about it from an outside perspective. Alton’s boutique options were basically non-existent.

Fast forward a few months; my boyfriend Steve (now my husband) and I were on vacation in Colorado. We were talking about Alton and how cool it was but that it was missing some essential downtown elements. I turned to him and said, “do you think I could open my own clothing store?” From there, the rest is history.

In December of 2018, Steve and I purchased the 11 E Broadway building in Alton. In May 2019, we moved downtown and by July I had quit my full-time job to pursue, what seemed like, a shot in the dark. I opened Rushmore on August 10th, 2019.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things started off beautifully! I had an amazing first day and that continued through the holiday season and into February of 2020. Once the pandemic shutdown hit, I was fortunate enough to have built a small and consistent clientele.

A few things really worked in my favor during that time; I didn’t have any employees to worry about keeping employees and I had already started building a shoppable website just prior to the shutdown, which put me a step ahead. Thanks to the amazing people in Alton I was able to sustain the businesses and scooted by until we reopened in July 2020.

Things were slow to regain the same momentum we had prior to the pandemic but the Holiday season came through strong and I was back on track. Of course, some of the biggest struggles were the ones I couldn’t control. Once the pandemic was leveling out, we had an 8-week span of street closure right outside of the store. All struggles aside, Rushmore has been able to ebb and flow through it all.

As you know, we’re big fans of Rushmore. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Rushmore is a women’s clothing store for the creative and independent. We offer new monthly collections of apparel, accessories, and lifestyle products that maintain a classic silhouette with a modern twist. We want you to find long-lasting and affordable styles. Something that one day your kids will be begging you for because they’re just that cool.

Our shopping experience is as personal as you would like it to be. If you are looking for a one-on-one styling session or to bring your gal pals in and enjoy a glass of wine while you shop, we will make it happen. We can do pop-ups at your home or private parties on our Rushmore Patio.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is that a person’s journey to personal style is always unique to them. I’ve been there, and I don’t want anyone to have a bad time as they discover what they love to wear and how they want to wear it!

It’s my job to offer an assortment of garments that people get excited about! Nothing warms my heart like seeing a mother and daughter shop together and jump out of the fitting room with joy because they can’t wait to show each other their cool new fit. The experience of shopping is sacred to me. I want that to resonate in my store.
