We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jala Little . Check out our conversation below.
Jala, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes, there have been times as a fashion stylist when I’ve been glad I didn’t act too quickly—especially when communicating with clients through text. Styling involves a lot of creative collaboration, and sometimes messages can be misinterpreted without tone or context. I’ve learned that taking a moment to pause before responding allows me to ensure my communication stays clear, professional, and thoughtful. Waiting gives me time to fully understand the client’s vision or concern, which often leads to better outcomes and stronger client relationships.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Jala Little, and I’m the creative force behind JalaWithTheStyles, a growing brand built on individuality, detail, and the art of expression through fashion. Based in Belleville, IL I’ve been a personal stylist for the past two years. I’ve developed a sharp eye for texture, color palettes, and originality, curating looks that reflect both personality and confidence. My work extends beyond styling—I specialize in creative direction for photoshoots, wardrobe styling, and both virtual and personal styling, offering clients a full-circle fashion experience. My aesthetic fuses streetwear’s bold authenticity with the modern, clean, and chic sophistication of luxury fashion—creating looks that feel timeless yet fresh.
What makes JalaWithTheStyles unique is its ability to adapt fashion to real life. I work with clients of all styles, sizes, and backgrounds, helping them discover their own version of “put together.” My passion lies in bringing creativity to every detail—from the flow of fabric to the energy of a perfectly matched accessory—making each look tell a story. It’s more than just dressing people; it’s about helping them see themselves in a different light.
Right now, I’m working on expanding my brand’s reach through a professional portfolio photoshoot designed to be seen by designers, editors, and industry headliners. This project will showcase my range as a stylist and the evolution of my creative direction, marking a new chapter of growth for JalaWithTheStyles. My mission is to continue building a brand that redefines what personal style can mean—bold, polished, and unapologetically original.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that truly shaped how I see the world came from working hands-on with clients of all sizes, backgrounds, and levels of confidence. Over the years as a fashion stylist, I’ve learned that styling goes far beyond fabrics and trends—it’s deeply emotional work. It’s about helping people see themselves in a new light.
From a young age, I was surrounded by strong, stylish women who embodied confidence and grace. My mother, Gina Little, and my grandmother, Gloria Little, both taught me the importance of respecting others and always presenting myself with pride. Growing up, church was one of the first places I fell in love with fashion. I can still remember the women walking in every Sunday wearing their beautiful designer suits, diamond jewelry, heels, and bold hats. It wasn’t just about what they wore—it was about the way they carried themselves. They looked good, and because of that, they felt good. My family has always had a passion for fashion.
However, taking weekend trips to the mall with my mother and grandmother became a ritual that shaped my eye for style and my appreciation for quality and detail. I idolized their “clean” and classic way of dressing, and from a little girl, I understood that looking good wasn’t about vanity—it was about self-respect, confidence, and self-expression. Those lessons became the foundation for how I view fashion today.
When I first began styling professionally, I thought it was simply about creating beautiful looks. But after working closely with women who felt uncomfortable showing their stomachs, plus-size clients learning to embrace their curves, and men who never felt confident enough to explore their own style, I realized fashion is so much more. It’s not a hobby—it’s a lifestyle and a confidence-builder. Every fitting, every photoshoot, and every moment spent understanding a client’s insecurities has taught me that the world isn’t always a happy or accepting place. Many people carry silent battles with self-image, and as a stylist, I’ve learned to meet them with empathy, patience, and understanding. Watching someone light up when they see themselves styled in a way that makes them feel powerful—that’s the real reward.
Those experiences, paired with the values my mother and grandmother instilled in me, shaped my belief that fashion isn’t about perfection; it’s about transformation. It’s about helping people see beauty where they once saw flaws, and confidence where they once saw doubt. That’s when I realized styling isn’t just what I do—it’s who I am.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds of my life have been the moments of discouragement that came with trying to grow as a fashion stylist in the age of social media. When I first started, I would pour my heart into every look, every shoot, and every post—only to receive two or three likes. It was hard not to feel defeated. I questioned if I was good enough, if people even saw my vision, or if my dreams were worth continuing.
There were times I felt depressed and overlooked, watching others grow faster while I struggled to build a following. But I’ve learned that God makes no mistakes in His timing. Those seasons of silence and slow growth taught me patience, humility, and discipline. During those moments, I held tightly to Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
That verse reminded me that even when I couldn’t see the results, God was still working behind the scenes. Through those trials, I began to understand that the process was just as important as the progress. God was shaping my character for the success I was praying for.
Through trial and error, I started studying what worked—identifying where my audience was, what they responded to, and how to connect with them authentically. I learned that success isn’t just about numbers; it’s about impact. Every small milestone, every genuine interaction, every person who felt inspired by my work became a reminder that I was on the right path. Those trials built my resilience. They reminded me that fashion styling is not just a business—it’s a calling that requires faith, dedication, and consistency. What once felt like rejection became redirection. I realized that my purpose isn’t defined by likes or followers, but by the confidence I help others find in themselves through style.
My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. Each challenge strengthened my faith, deepened my creativity, and taught me that when you stay patient, trust God’s plan, and keep showing up, He’ll always make a way—even when it feels like no one is watching.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
As a fashion stylist, I differentiate between fads and foundational shifts by looking at longevity, purpose, and impact on personal style. Fads are often fleeting—they catch attention quickly but lack depth. They may be exciting for a season, but they rarely resonate with a client’s lifestyle or long-term wardrobe goals foundational shifts, on the other hand, are changes that reflect deeper evolution in fashion, culture, and individual self-expression. These shifts influence how people think about style, sustainability, inclusivity, and authenticity. When advising clients, I focus on these shifts because they allow for meaningful, versatile, and confident styling that transcends trends.
Working closely with a wide range of clients—from plus-size women to men exploring their personal style—I’ve learned to observe not just what’s popular, but what empowers people to feel confident and authentic. For example, the rise of body positivity and inclusive sizing isn’t just a trend—it’s a foundational shift in how fashion is created, marketed, and worn. It informs how I curate looks, guide clients, and build wardrobes that truly reflect their individuality.
At length, differentiating between a fad and a real shift comes down to empathy, observation, and strategy. I ask myself: Will this inspire confidence beyond one season? Will it align with the client’s lifestyle and values? Will it elevate how they feel about themselves? The answers help me guide clients toward style choices that are not only fashionable but transformative.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
What people often misunderstand about my legacy is threefold: that fashion styling is just a hobby, that freelance work isn’t a real career, and that coming from a small town limits the impact you can make in the industry. The truth is, my legacy is about proving the exact opposite. I want to create opportunities, knowledge, and resources for the next generation that I didn’t have—so young stylists, especially those outside major fashion hubs like NYC, don’t have to navigate a world where internships and jobs feel out of reach. I’m building something for my kids, grandkids, and future generations: a thriving business, a foundation in fashion education, and a blueprint for career success.
I envision a legacy that lasts beyond trends—a business that thrives no matter the century, grounded in a deep understanding of fashion as both an art and a strategy. Part of this vision includes educational tools, mentorship programs, and courses that teach upcoming stylists not just how to style, but how to navigate the industry with confidence and professionalism. My goal is to make the fashion world accessible, empowering, and sustainable for those who follow.
Ultimately, my legacy will be measured by the doors I open and the confidence I instill in others. I want young stylists to know they can build thriving careers and innovate in ways I could only dream of when starting out. It’s about leaving something lasting, impactful, and accessible—turning my passion into a framework that others can build on, ensuring the next generation has what I didn’t, and the ability to carry it even further.
