Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Charles Abdul-Wali Muhammad of Alton, IL

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Charles Abdul-Wali Muhammad. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Charles Abdul-Wali, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
While each are important and determining factors that I take seriously, I would have to say integrity. Be honest is integral in establishing anything. Something built on falsehood has no chance of being productive.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Charles Abdul-Wali Muhammad. I am a 52 year old father of two daughters and seven grandchildren. I am an entertainment journalist with One Digital Media and I have an undying love for the liberation of Black and oppressed people all over the world.

I pride myself by having a small circle and a I have developed relationships with key individuals of whom I respect and admire. I give all praise to Allah for everything that I have and every accomplishment that I’ve received.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest moment of feeling powerful was back in 2009 when I got the opportunity to host a family reunion. Growing up as a young boy, my grandfather, George Wash Marshall Sr., instilled the pride of family early on. He showed me the love of family and how important it was to know family and to be united. After the reunion was over, many of the elders told me it was the best family reunion they had ever attended.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Just remember that people that you have helped will turn on you. It is unfortunate and it happens but prepare for it and do not overreact. You can’t stop being a giving and kind person just because someone didn’t appreciate the opportunity you gave them. Just cut off the underserving person and continue to be kind and giving.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version is the real me. I don’t and have never compromised myself in private. Most people who are familiar with me know what I stand for and who I stand with. There is no ambiguity with me. Either come correct or you will be removed from around me.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I have been working a mission since 1987 that most have yet to understand. I have given my life, risked my freedom and compromised my health for so many. I used to get upset because I would see many get awards for doing way less than what I have done, however man gives awards but my REWARD is with my Lord (Allah).
