Ericka Kennedy shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Ericka, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I have a 4 and a half month old, so my days are full of cuddles and playtime with my baby girl. She is becoming more independent and I’m learning to adapt to this new big change for me. I’ve been starting to bake again and have taken on some work recently. Learning new work flow and life balance has been something new to navigate as well.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Food Photographer and my brand, Lavender Flour, represents my passion for food, photography and a simple, but elegant lifestyle. I mostly incorporate rustic food and props for my images. I feel it creates a quiet and calm tone and feel. I want the viewer to feel like they are tucked away in an old farmhouse with beautiful natural light.
My clients ideally align with this style. I had the chance to photograph holiday images for Five Farms Irish Cream since my last interview, and more recently The Blue Owl Bakery.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents taught me to work hard. Growing up, I remember my dad was working two jobs and my mom loved her job at a car dealership. They taught me to always show up and on time for work. No excuses.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I wouldn’t say that no one knows about this but people may be surprised to hear that I miss California. I’m originally from Los Angeles, and have lived in MO since 2022. I love it here and I’m so happy that my husband and I made this big change, especially now with starting a family. I do miss the summer evenings, the hustle and bustle of the city, and especially my family in CA. I wish it were a place we could settle down but it currently isn’t the right fit for us. With all that said, MO has been good to us and we are so thankful for that.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
When it comes to photography, I think if you can adapt quickly, then fads can be great for your portfolio. It shows that you can jump in and do a variety of styles and try new things. I choose to stick to my personal style that I feel is true to me and what I know I can do best. I believe my work also has a timeless feel to it so I can look back in 20 years and it still feels relevant. AI is something that is taking off fast and also might work for some people, but I don’t believe it works for the natural approach in my photography.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not living in another country one day. My husband and I dream of living in Scotland or Italy and I hope that it could still be a possibility for us in the future.
