Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Laura Tucker of Creve Coeur

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Laura Tucker. Check out our conversation below.

Laura, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
After a fall back in May that forced me to slow down, like way down. I have been revisiting graphic design and focusing on creating in Illustrator. Drawing and making posters, postcards, and notebooks. We’ll see what they become. I find it very relaxing. I overlay images that I have captured in silhouette to complete the design. I get lost in the process. Sometimes for hours.

I have also just finished my second children’s book. I illustrated those as well. This is a great creative outlet. when it’s too hot to get out with my camera,

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Laura. I”m many things but an artist at heart. Photography is, by far, my favorite medium but I also like to draw, create graphic illustrations and occasionally, write.

I think one of the more unique parts of my story is that I started so late. I’m a late bloomer. I began painting in my late twenties but really didn’t even pick up a camera until I was in my thirties. I started shooting concerts in my fifties. It’s never too late to discover what lights you up!

I also really love to photograph fashion shows and high school Seniors. Street photography is also really cool.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I wholeheartedly believed that I could be a gymnast or a drummer. I loved both! I grew up in a very small town, and gymnastics lessons were not an option so I had to let that one go. I would sit in anticipation, inches from the television during every Olympics, to get a glimpse of my heroes, Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton.

I played the drums a bit in high school and in my twenties, but eventually gave that up, too. I can still play Sweet Child O’ Mine on queue.

It’s funny how life directs you, and the things you couldn’t get enough of as a kid somehow elude you as you grow.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
This one is easy. I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 24. I was barely old enough to be an adult but I suddenly had to navigate life without my compass. She was one of those really sweet moms who just brought comfort without even trying. Losing her was an incredibly difficult experience.

One of the hardest parts about that is having my own children, who would never know her like I never knew her mom. It’s not a great cycle.

The next wound be losing my only sibling. My brother. Both of them died young. It’s still sometimes hard to even fathom that they are gone. But I am a very spiritual person, and I know they are right here with me. I see signs and get messages from them regularly. One of those is seeing hearts everywhere or hearing songs that resonate. That’s how I heal.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Angels are real.

The universe or God speaks to us through signs and synchronicities. You have to open yourself to the concept to see them, but once you do, it’s pretty incredible.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I would like most to be remembered for being kind, fun, and thoughtful. I really do try to treat others the way I want to be treated. Now, will I come unglued if someone messes with my kids? I think you know the answer.

I will also defend what I know to be right and stand up for the underdog. I have no tolerance for bullies or people who mistreat animals.
