We recently had the chance to connect with Matt McCallie M.M.E. and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire myself. As someone who values character, I admire those who demonstrate integrity, reliability, honesty, and professionalism. Something I learned decades ago as a musician is that performing is more enjoyable when you work with good people. When the performers are enjoying giving the show, the audience tends to recognize and respond to that energy and share the joy.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Since 2011, I have run one of the largest professional orchestras in the Midwest. It wasn’t my idea to start this band, rather, it was other musicians I worked with who came to me, asking me to help create a higher caliber, more professional and enjoyable experience than what we had in other groups. We originally focused mostly on big band jazz but gradually delved into nearly every popular style according to what audiences wanted to hear.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believed what I was told by adults, that nearly any future was possible. I expected that I was intelligent enough to be successful and make the best of any situation. Reality has been harsh and physical disabilities have determined my every activity for more than a quarter of my existence.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Many. Running a large orchestra in my situation, entirely by myself, is extremely difficult. It costs more than double what it makes and the work is intense and endless. A wiser person would have quit years ago and at some point, I should. I hope someone else will someday carry on my efforts of creating great music and connecting many amazing professional musicians with appreciative audiences.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I believe in honesty. Some have told me I overshare but others have expressed their appreciation for my candor and that the experiences I divulge are not only interesting, my stories also help them consider perspectives and gain empathy.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Perhaps peace is not the term I’ll describe here, maybe belonging. I have long felt most at home, comfortable, and where I belong on stage. Sharing music for an in-person audience feels like the best, most important, most effectively good thing I can do for others. I perform for a lot of high energy dances so those exciting events are not peaceful, but definitely gleeful.
