We recently had the chance to connect with Rememberbuddha and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rememberbuddha, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
A happy life and happy family. I keep a lot of things private. I love my privacy. My wife, our cat and I live a pretty simple life and it’s the best thing ever. Nobody needs to see us making dinner together or watching our favorite shows, playing our favorite games, listening to our favorite music together, really just doing anything together. I like that it’s kept in the proximity of our home. You don’t have to see that but know it’s very important to me and is the foundation for my happiness.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m rememberbuddha, Buddha, Buwop whatever you want to call me. I am a vessel for anything creative but mostly I’m a music artist and videographer. I’ve released a deep catalog of music bending sounds and centering my focus on rap. I produce for a hand full of incredibly talented artists all of them doing vastly different genres so it keeps me on my toes in the best way possible. Over the past year I have dove into the world of film and have grown pretty quickly over the past 365. I have shot primarily music videos that have pushed true creative themes back into visuals. I’m currently planning on releasing a collab EP with my boy D-Hood this Fall. I’m also working on my follow up album to my most recent album Let’s Watch Some TV. We are currently working on a short film too, but we are just in the scripting process so be patient for me. I’m putting a lot on my plate, and it feels good. I plan to change the view on what it means to be an artist from St. Louis.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was scared. I was uncomfortable. Insecure to be myself. I was around people who wanted me to be something that I’m not. The pressures of following a path where my heart would be bound to a soulless bland life was terrifying to me. I don’t want to waste my time doing something that my instinct goes against, life is precious. It wasn’t until I moved in with my wife that I found the confidence and support to be who I not only wanted to be but needed to be. I was terrified to have a different opinion. It felt like life was a multiple-choice test. Every question needed a calculated answer. Now I just speak and do as my instincts direct me. No more walking on eggshells for people who clearly do the same. I’m proud of who I am, confident in my direction and truly feel very happy and grateful for who I am.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Everything is going to be alright. Don’t listen to everyone but also make sure you’re listening. Sometimes friends don’t last and that’s okay we grow, and we change. When things start to get bad just know that when it’s good it will feel so much better. It’s okay to cry and feel alone, it’s more normal than you think. It’s okay to be kind and compassionate, don’t let anyone tell you different. When it gets tough you aren’t alone, please don’t be scared to reach out. It is very cool to try it’s actually the coolest thing ever to try very hard, fail and get back up to prove them wrong.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That record sale numbers matter or followers, streams, monthly listeners, etc. I mean yeah it matters. You don’t want nobody listening or seeing your art. But a lot of that has to do with algorithm, timing, finances, available networking, etc. I know some albums with 20 streams that are lightyears better than those with millions. Bot streams, monthly listener boosts, follower boosts, Instagram (in general) and so many more fabricated realities of this. You unfortunately can’t quantify feeling and that is where the value lies in my field.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes. Unfortunately, reaching goals or milestones don’t feel as satisfying. I want to love my growth and successes, but it unfortunately feels like just another expectation being met. I lost a little of that spark in the wonderment of what I’m doing because I just try so hard to reach a high quality that it feels less like a love and more of a talent show and I hate that. I’m trying to find that wonderment that makes this feel special. The most fun I ever have is creating my music not releasing it. The feeling is truly found in the journey not the destination.
