Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Ruthie Cordia

Ruthie Cordia shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Ruthie, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Fun fact about me is I love to travel! Long trips short trips, week long or weekend, I am always up for an adventure to some place new. This year Ive had the opportunity to go to Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Wyoming. Traveling has always been something that I’ve dreamed of being able to do and I am so very thankful I have gotten to partake in it this year.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, my name is Ruthie, I’m the girl behind the lens with Open Lens Photography. My brand focuses on your world and capturing your unforgettable moments. My style would be considered bright/true to color. I truly enjoy what I do! I am working on expanding my brand more and booking more studio sessions (they’re my favorite aside from weddings)

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother for sure! She has always supported me in any way she could, her and my dad have always been my biggest supporters. I noticed at an early age that my mother always carried a camera, that I was always near by to steal and use myself. In that sense me and my mother were alike but when it came down to it I was very different from my family. I had a love for reading, traveling, and school while my parents really didn’t. Although I was always so different from them they constantly supported me no matter what I wanted to do. My mother always noticed my creativity, which I did partially get from her. I truly think that even from an early age she always saw me clearly.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Always be grateful. Be grateful for what you have now and what you will have in the future. Suffering will remind you that nothing is permanent. Things can be gone in a moment. Success tends to make you feel on top of the world, sometimes we can forget about all the things we should be grateful for. I remember when I was feeling like a failure, I stepped back and looked at all the work I had done, the progress I made, and I was grateful for it all.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I honestly think they would say that loyalty, dedication, and respect. When it comes to my friends I am selfless and loyal to a fault. I will always stand by them, even if I don’t always agree with them. I dedicate most of my free time to my photography business. It may sometimes mean I don’t always get to spend time with my friends but they all understand. Above all I respect people, I am always kind even when it is not reciprocated.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I think they would miss my passion. Often times during sessions I am told the same thing, “I can tell you truly love what you do.” Photography is what I am most passionate about. I walk into every session with a mindset, these will be the best photos. The photos don’t exist yet, not one pose has been set up, but I am sure. I hype myself up for them even though they haven’t even happened yet. I believe in myself and my customers believe in me too. I think if I retired at any age they would miss that.
