Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Shakira Denise of University City

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shakira Denise. Check out our conversation below.

Shakira, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m chasing a life that feels like mine – full of purpose, peace, and those little moments where my work and joy meet in the same room. That’s the heartbeat of Emerge too – creating space for people to align their lives in a way that truly feels good from the inside out. If I stopped, I think the vision would still find me some callings don’t let you walk away… and honestly, I’d probably get bored without it. Curiosity has a way of pulling me back in every time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
First, I have to thank Voyage for my very first feature where I shared my journey as a makeup artist and photographer, That chapter taught me so much about creativity, storytelling, and the power of building something from the ground up. Since then, my path has expanded in ways I never imagined – I co-own a trucking company with my husband, we’ve managed a small fleet of vehicles on Turo, and each venture has sharpened my skills as a businesswoman. Now, I’m stepping full into my next chapter as the founder of Emerge, a luxury faith-based lifestyle brand that helps people align spiritually, emotionally, and financially so they can show up as their higher selves in business and life. From guided journals and affirmation decks to digital resources and community experiences, I’m creating tools that support the journey of becoming- with both grace and strategy. It’s been a full-circle experience watching how each season of my career has prepared me for this one, and I’m excited to keep building in a way that blends purpose, wellness, and entrepreneurship.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was a curious, creative girl who believed she could turn anything into something beautiful. I saw life as a canvas – whether I was writing, drawing, or finding ways to bring joy to the people around me. Somewhere along the way, I learned to quiet that part of myself, to shrink in order to fit, and to trade authenticity for acceptance. For years, I carried the belief that my worth was tied to how much I could do and how perfectly I could perform. That mindset helped me push through certain seasons, but it came with a cost. It’s a part of me that served its purpose, and now I’m learning to release it – making room for grace, alignment, and the kind of success that feels good from the inside out. One moment that shifted everything for me was stepping away from my first love makeup and photography to co-own a trucking company with my husband. It was a leap that taught me reinvention is not losing yourself, it’s expanding yourself. Every chapter since then has built on that truth, and it’s the heartbeat of Emerge: helping others release what no longer serves them, honor their becoming, and return to the truest version of who they are – even if it means rewriting their whole story.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell her, “You are enough exactly as you are, and you don’t have to earn the right to take up space.” For so long, I measured my value by what I could produce or how well I could perform, not realizing that my worth was already settled before I ever achieved a thing. I’d remind her that she doesn’t have to rush, compete, or prove – she can trust the timing of her life and still arrive exactly where she’s meant to be, I’d also tell her that one day, this lesson will become apart of her life’s work – creating Emerge to help others release the same pressures, embrace their becoming, and show up as their fullest selves. Every twist, pause, and unexpected turn isn’t a detour – it’s the road that will lead her home to herself.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to Emerge – not just as a brand, but as a living, breathing movement that helps people align spiritually, emotionally, and financially so they can show up as their highest selves. This isn’t a project I’m building for a quick win or a fleeting moment. It’s something I’m willing to spend years – even decade – nurturing, because it’s tied to my life’s purpose. I believe in building with depth over speed, creating something that can stand the test of time and still feel relevant to the next generation. I know there will be seasons where it’s happening quietly under the surface – but im committed to them all. That commitment is the same one that carried me through every chapter before this – from makeup and photography, to co-owning a trucking company, to managing a fleet on Turo. No matter the industry, my approach has always been the same: build with intention, lead with purpose, and stay until the vision becomes reality.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I lived with intention – that I didn’t just chase success, I build something that made others feel seen, valued, and Inspired to grow. I want my story to be one of alignment, where my work and my values were never in competition, and where every season of my life from makeup and photography to trucking and now Emerge – was about leaving people better than I found them. I hope they remember the way I made space for others to step into their own becoming, and how I wasn’t afraid to evolve in public, even when it meant starting over. More than anything, I want my legacy to remind people that your life is allowed to be isn’t measure only in numbers, but in the lives you’ve touched along they way.
