Soloman Crowe shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Soloman, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Starting my band, damnneardead. Shout out to Jeff and Joe, my brothers in the band. Love you guys.
I’ve been doing it alone for so long because it probably felt easier to fail alone.
But its so much more fun to succeed together. Especially in the kind of music we make, which is for people who struggle with addiction, mental illness, etc.
The three of us struggle with those things too, so being able to write and play music together for people that struggle like we do is a massive blessing. It helps us even more than our listeners🖤
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Soloman Crowe, I am the lead singer and primary (for now) songwriter of a band called Damn Near Dead.
I am also a former junkie, criminal and homeless deadbeat.
The music we play is inspired by finding a way out of that lifestyle and using those scars to build something beautiful.
“Damn Near Dead but Not Dead Yet.”
Thats our motto
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
As a child I believed I could change the temperature of running water with my mind. True story.
No, the real answer is when I played an original song in front of an audience for the first time.
Thats when I realized that everything I’ve been through was important. It was training.
Training for this. So I can write these songs and deliver them in a meaningful and healing way to people, which in turn does alot of healing for me too.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I kind of touched on this in the last question but I can never say it enough.
It wasn’t suffering.
Yea, I suffered. And I made other people suffer too. I lied to my mother, I stole from my kid sister, I broke into the homes of innocent people with a loaded gun and stole whatever I could fit in my bag. I spent most of my 20’s with a needle in my arm, on a street corner, in a trap house, or in a jail cell.
And then I got better.
And if you’re reading this and you’re thinking you won’t get better.. you will.
If you want to.
Because what you call suffering, might just be training.
You can look at your life as a serious of bad things that have happened to you, or you can see them as challenges overcome. Its up to you.
But im telling you. If i can do it, anyone can. I am NOT special. And neither are you.
And isn’t that a wonderful thing to realize? The universe doesn’t give a fuck about you. It’s not out to get you. The only adversary in your life is YOU.
And YOU can choose to change that.
Its up to YOU.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely.
Relentless authenticity is the secret ingredient to the recipe.
When i start lying and hiding things again is when I start using again.
I am loud about my problems cuz too many of us are dying in silence.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My words.
