Today we’d like to introduce you to AKJ.
Hi AKJ, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In grade school, I saw a play called “Madea’s Class Reunion” by Tyler Perry. I was amazed because I had never seen so many people that looked like me on TV before. I was even more intrigued when I discovered that a black man wrote and directed it. So I started writing. For years that’s all I did was write. I never put my work out to the public because I didn’t know how. I was just a kid in the 6th grade. But I just kept writing. When I got to college, that is where AKJ was born. I became an HBCU royalty, started in plays, created and produced a citywide talent show called “A Royal Showdown,” became a college student president, and joined my fraternity Omega Psi Phi. Now, I have a growing YouTube channel with over 4k subscribers. Soon and very soon, you will see AKJ movies, tv shows, plays, etc.
Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been easy, and it won’t be. My biggest obstacle is me. There have been times when giving up is easier. But, I had to learn to feed myself positivity. I can not get anyone else to believe in me if I don’t believe in myself first. I have faced a lot in the last 5 years. One example is my overcoming homelessness after a year and a half. But thankfully, I showed myself how much endurance I had to preserve through that hardship.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an aspiring filmmaker and playwright. I started AKJ LLC in 2018, and it serves as the parent company to AKJ TV and AKJ Productions. Our primary goal is to Create. Educate. And Entertain our audience through various avenues. I will win an Oscar! We will make movies, stage plays, sitcoms, short films, and so much more.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
If you wake up in the morning, all you think about is your passion. At your job, thinking about your passion, in the car driving, thinking about your passion, eating, thinking about your passion, then you should be focusing on your passion. Your gift will make room for you.
