Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Melancon.
Hi Brenda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It was by way of profound longing and the slow education of practical application that I created Luna Soeur.
My earliest understanding of beauty was tied to my father. He provided a sense of stability in a world that often felt uncertain, and he showed me the depth of true love through his protection and presence. From him, I learned that careful craftsmanship and intentional creation of worthy goods by hand hold value far beyond material weight. His love and guidance have followed me through life. I think, in many ways, I have been trying to make visible that which he gave me: dignity, devotion, endurance, and the stoic strength to press on in the face of life’s many challenges.
In time, jewelry became my language of expression. There was something in the process that felt honest to me. In a way, I felt that it reflected the pressure, trials, and strength of patience…the experiences of life.
Luna Soeur is where my love of celestial forms, sacred geometry, history, faith, and craftsmanship came into clearer alignment. The work is inspired by the order of Creation: the mathematics of the stars, the architecture of the heavens, the symbols that have carried great meaning across centuries. I make jewelry for people who are drawn to depth in beauty, meaningful pieces that feel personal and powerful at once.
I am still very much at the bench, shaping each piece by hand.
In many respects, I feel as though I am still carrying the deep regard for life my father placed in these hands, and as such I will always lead with a sense of stewardship and the belief that true beauty is worth careful tending.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This is a discipline that requires time and patience to develop skill, refine one’s vision, and to remain steady through the various challenges. There have been periods of uncertainty, of course, and weight of continuing without immediate recognition or success, but such is the nature of building anything of worth.
Over time, I have come to understand that what appears as difficulty is often refinement, like metal under fire, an invitation to become more aligned with the vision.
There is still much ahead, but I always do my best to trust the pace and keep my eyes set on my destination.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a metalsmith and the founder of Luna Soeur, a jewelry house devoted to creating pieces that carry meaning, structure, and permanence.
At this time, my work is centered around the Heavenly Bodies collection, interlocking ring sets inspired by celestial objects, sacred geometry, and the order found in Creation; I would consider myself most known for these forms. Each piece is designed to feel personal and enduring, a reminder of our infinite connection, collecting memories on our life’s journey.
Sterling silver and gold are my primary choice of medium, each piece formed by hand at the bench. Throughout the process, I do my best to be deliberate and exact, mindful of Michelangelo’s belief that the form is already there, waiting to be revealed.
What I am most proud of is not any single piece, but the body of work as a whole. That it has remained consistent in its intention and has grown more refined without losing its essence.
What sets my work apart is its orientation. It is driven by a commitment to meaning, proportion, and longevity. Passing trends have no place here. I approach jewelry as something that should harmonize with the person wearing it, belonging rather than competing for attention.
These pieces are markers of time and memory.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a child, I was quiet and reflective, speaking little and spending much of my time reading and writing. I also had an early sensitivity to beauty in my own small, quiet ways, dressing up and arranging pretty little things.
My father was a painter and a welder, and I admired him deeply. I wanted, in my own way, to follow that same instinct toward creating beauty with my hands, something that could hold feeling and form at once. While painting did not become my medium, that desire to create remained and eventually found its place in metal.
