Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Cox
Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I became an art therapist to create the type of outlet I would’ve loved when I was younger. Mental Health is important for any person, at any age, but my “inner child” is definitely my greatest influence. My therapy space was designed to include bright colors, toys, patterns, nostalgia, art history, comfort, inclusivity, and humor. My therapeutic approach is similar- its about making a connection based on authenticity. I want my clients to feel connected to me, to themselves, and to their goals. Everything that I do and create is about that.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, not always. In this field, it’s common to try different approaches to therapy and different environments. I have experience in inpatient hospitalization, residential care, community agencies, for-profit, non-profit, and worked with a variety of clients. While each experience had its own strengths and challenges, none of them included my full vision. So that’s why I had to create my own space. I’d say the greatest challenge for me, was working for leadership that did not fully understand therapy and the therapist’s entire role. Now I get to be my own boss and I don’t think I could ever go back!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a mental health clinician, I specialize in art therapy. I use art and other expressive outlets to support my client’s goals to improve their lives. My approach is eclectic, but overall focused on helping clients identify the Parts of Self (IFS Therapy) that need the most support. Once we identify the Parts, we can identify strengths, emotional needs, coping skills, outlets, supports, and more. IFS has been the most impactful work of my career and it’s a surreal joy to support clients in learning more about themselves and their experiences.
There are probably a few things that set me apart. I also have a therapy dog, Dex, in the office with me. He’s a 2 year old mini Aussie Doodle and is dearly loved by my clients. And in addition to my private practice work, I host themed community art events and invite people to connect over art and trying something different. I even include Tik Tok trends like adding ghosts to thrifted painting and made giant friendship bracelets inspired by Taylor Swift. Even thought we try to make art, the purpose is more about socializing, creativity, and trying something new. I provide the space, materials, and snacks and just hope everyone has a good time!
Outside of my work as an art therapist, I like to refer to myself as a “Hobby Queen.” I have dabbled in almost everything you can think of, but lately my focus has been on repurposing. I am always collecting, recycling, and saving. I like to take standard shipping boxes and transform them into trompe l’oeil sculptures. I’ve created giant Cheez its made from styrofoam, a 90’s inspired lizard keychain out of pool noodles, and 3-D Loteria Cards out of cardboard and masking tape. I like to find an interesting piece of “trash” and make something fun. I started a creative “challenge” and catalog my creations on Instagram and have gained a supportive following! This helps clear my mind between sessions and engage my creative Parts.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Collaboration and networking are so important! One of my favorite outlets, and also the most beneficial for business, is to talk with other creators and clinicians. It’s more beneficial for everyone when we can utilize each other’s strengths, share ideas, spread the word, and brainstorm with other minds. It’s a misconception that collaborating with others in the same field hurts business- it’s actually the opposite and this creates more opportunities and resources for our clients.
