Life & Work with Desiree Holland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Holland.

Hi Desiree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born in Somers Point, NJ, raised in Philadelphia, PA. I graduated from The Art Institute of Philadelphia with an Associates in Digital Film and Video Production, where I was awarded an outstanding achievement award in 2015. During my years attending The Art Institute, I created an LLC named “Hard Labor Productions” providing freelance photography and videography services. Having the privilege and right amount of resources to work closely with my fellow peers and community; such as university post-graduates, musicians, actors, models, and independent filmmakers. I was able to produce numerous micro-budget productions, which accumulated thousands of views.

Now although, I enjoyed what I was doing during the time. I felt lost without true fulfillment, so I moved to Los Angeles, California in search of Hollywood endeavors. Just to find something more appealing to the joy of my spirit. Which was, mastering the ability to live a life of great peace while encouraging others to do the same through my art and travel vlogs. After surviving Los Angeles for about three years, I went off to explore life in the wilderness of Lake George, Colorado. I used my time there as a financial vehicle to save up for my first living abroad experience, Japan.

Once I moved to Japan, I found a job as an English Teacher in Hikone-Shiga. A small privately-owned International language school, in a beautiful rural area. During my time there, I got to explore many parts of Asia and record my experiences. However, unfortunately, due to the unforeseen circumstances of Covid-19, I had to abruptly leave my home and job in Japan to move back to the United States.

Since I’ve been back in the States, I decided to move to Saint Louis, Missouri as a perfect city to regroup and apply all that I’ve learned into my social media vlog platforms. Additionally, reinvent my LLC with more refined intentions for my clientele. Enduring many hardships and tribulations along the way, I’ve encountered great insight and wisdom on how to survive anywhere in any season. Currently, I am producing an online YouTube channel where I show viewers how to live and travel vigorously anywhere in America, even all the way overseas from my own experiences. While continuing to produce passion projects, I am also still providing photography and videography services.

My ultimate goal is to bring great joy to a versatile audience, collaborate with other travelers and artists in order to become familiar with their cultural backgrounds.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
From the time I left Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2017, and moved to Los Angeles, California. I experienced numerous hardships, such as homelessness, doubt, fear, judgment, and most importantly lack of financial stability. Each year and each destination I’ve experienced, definitely has had its roadblocks.

Consistently, trying to overcome childhood trauma. I tended to have got in the way of my own success without seeking professional help along the way. Alcoholism, anxiety and depression in various ways stifled my growth at times.

Many people assumed that I must of or have had a strong financial support system but that’s not really the case at all. I’ve achieved what I have, solely from the spirit that lives within and encountered life long friendships with strangers. Growing up poor, I always felt like Oliver Twist from the Charles Dickens Novel. I’ve just been a Black-American girl longing for something greater than the hand that I was dealt in life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creative producer, photographer and travel vlogger with history as a street performer. Before stepping behind the scenes, I spent most of my high school years as a self-taught mime, one who performs pantomime but with influences of contemporary and praise dance.

Slowly after my school career ended at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, I continued to hone my craft in photography and cinematography. I am best known for producing music videos, vlogs, portraits, events, and miscellaneous online passion projects.

I am most proud of how far my portfolio has expanded with excellence.

I’d like to believe what sets me apart from others is my perseverance, grit, and ability to exude love no matter the obstacle present or past.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
It’s difficult to list just one favorite childhood memory, simply because I’d like to believe I had more than just one. I was the type of kid that always tried to find joy in most situations, despite the hard times of my upbringing.

What a beautiful and inspiring story for many of our youth today, who often believe, they can’t rise up out of their current, often heartbreaking experiences, that may hold them back from living their lives to their full potential. I’m so glad that through all of Desi’s struggles, she’s managed to keep pressing on regardless of whatever obstacles she’s faced. Her determination keeps her going, that makes me believe even more, now than ever, that there’s nothing she can’t do when she puts her mind to it, come what may!
