Life & Work with Jeff Miller of STL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Miller.

Jeff, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My path started by earning my biology degree from Missouri State in Springfield in 2005. I moved home and I began working at a small environmental testing company in St. Louis in 2007, where I worked for 17 years. In late 2023 I decided to begin my own business. I began to lay the foundation for that idea and ultimately formed Scope Environmental LLC. I opened for business in spring of 2024.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Started the business with my own money. I had the first set of equipment stolen from vehicle shortly after purchasing. Had to rent equipment to save up money to begin to buy my own. Starting out, the phones weren’t exactly ringing off the hook. I might only get a couple of calls per week in the first few months. I’ve had to teach myself to do a wide number of skills as a small business owner that are new to me. Now that business is going well and things are steady, the challenge can be just having a healthy work/life balance, and to still make time for myself and to spend with my wife and kids, and my dogs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do inspections on homes and commercial buildings, mainly to test for environmental concerns such as mold, asbestos, radon, and lead. My specialty is indoor air quality inspections to determine if a building has a problem with mold or contamination. I’m most proud of the fact that I was able to build up a customer base through referrals and repeat business. What sets me apart from others is that my educational background is in science, including the specialized training in microbiology and microscopy that now inform my understanding of what I see when I’m on different types of jobs. It also gives me the ability to get answers without having to ship samples out of state.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Before most of my free time was consumed by running a business, I used to be pretty good at homebrewing. I made several different types of beers over a period of a few years including about 15 medal winners. I also made my own kombucha. Though my fermenting days may be behind me, I also am a certified beer judge that keeps me connected to the hobby by tasting and scoring other homebrewers beers.
