Life & Work with Libby Dalessio of Overland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Dalessio

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am from Southern Illinois and grew up in those areas where my love for drawing and crafting started. I was always drawing, doodling, scrapbooking, and making crafts as a young child. I looked at art in those ages in such disbelief thinking that only the bravest most talented people could make fine art and even paintings. In 2020 I used thoughts of mixing primary colors and daydreams of making pictures and just went freehand at some painting and fell in love with it. So I started to paint after work as a hobby and a release. That’s when family and friends saw the joy I had creating and starting to offer to buy my pieces. I got so much support and love from creating art. Now I am learning to network in the art community and my dream is to continue learning and creating art and to expand my art business for years to come.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
People say when you find your passion that work doesn’t feel so hard. Art is a huge passion of mine so I feel as if ever since I started playing and creating 4 years ago that it has just been very smooth in the sense of support. The biggest struggles are artist self doubt, long nights, meeting deadlines and things like that. You just have to remove fear and comparison. Put your work out there!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I paint acrylic paintings and artwork. I can’t wait to try oils after I use up the rest of my acrylic stock. I have experimented with painting on glass, wood, fabric and shoes. I love creating on canvas and canvas paper and have been known to use expoxy resin to. coat the tops of some of my smaller work and those turn out very fun.
I have played with clay in the past too and can’t wait to paint on more wood.

I am most proud of my recent collaborations with an incredible Southern Illinois artist Nick Allen. We did the biggest pieces I have ever done using acrylic and spray paint.

I love a lot of pieces I have created but I have not quite got a signature style yet. I love learning about and practicing different ideas, mediums and techniques.

I started creating a lot of abstract floral and botanical inspired pieces but I really have so many ideas and ways I want to execute them. People say I use bright colors and think my lines look good. I think my work is unique and fun☺️

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I just see creating content for websites, fairs, markets, or any events where I can network and meet people buying my work in person. I hope to expand my business close to a full time situation in that time frame for sure. I would love to do larger scale paintings, walls and murals eventually too. I will try to adjust my business and create as much content as I can and start to share more of that.
