Life & Work with Ngozi The Blessed of St. Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ngozi The Blessed.

Hi Ngozi , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Thank you for having me. My name is Tekasheena N. Dick. I go by my artist name of “Ngozi The Blessed”. I grew up in south St. Louis with my Army veteran mom and siblings. I grew up surrounded by good music, arts and crafts, and literature. My late mom was very big on all of us being literate and articulate. This early and heavy exposure to good books is where I believe I became interested in short stories and poetry. In grade school (Carmen Trails Elementary), I had to do an essay on Dr. Maya Angelou. Reading her works is what made me say, “yea, I’m a poet.”

Poetry, spoken word, rap and writing became an outlet for my feelings, culture (I grew up influenced by various cultures, ethnicities and traditions), love and life. I also grew a love for film and skit script writing (maybe due to my mom’s love for movies and good tv shows.) Particularly comedy, romance, and drama. I’m also an actress, filmmaker, makeup artist, sound engineer, interior and graphic designer, retired dancer, spiritual counselor, author, ghostwriter and blogger.

These various disciplines, experiences and talents sparked a vision inside of me. A way to “put it all together” in a creative juice. That’s what led me into becoming a blogger. That’s what birthed “She Writes”. My blog is dedicated to the ARTS. Specifically, St. Louis born or based artists of all genres. It became a perfect way for me to share my writing and design skills with the community and also express myself through my poetry and articles. So that’s my baby now, and gift to the crafts.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ugh, and a NO lol. When you’re young and gifted but yet pressured from society to be “one thing”…being a creative can start to feel like a “plague”. There were many times in my life where I would discover a talent and then another shortly after. Wanting to do it ALL I believe is a common desire for a multi-disciplinary artist. So, I think the main struggle was “what do I do and when?” Now I’m at a point in my journey where I have accepted wearing “many hats” and that’s beautifully ok. The way it SHOULD be for me. I don’t mind being a “mad hatter”. As long as I can balance them all on my head. In Nigeria, the saying is “cut your cloth according to your size.” Also being a mom, balancing motherhood and arts/entrepreneurship has its days. I’m not grey at the moment, so I think I’m balancing ok lol.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a writer and poet, I have recorded poems available on all streaming platforms. I perform spoken word occasionally. I blog for local artists and venues, and I offer ghostwriting services as well. I’ve also written many skits, and also a web series production titled “Back to Norma” back in 2019. As a makeup artist, I’ve been a professional freelance since 2015. I’ve done countless weddings, photoshoots, parties, and cultural ceremonies (mostly within the local African community). My makeup artistry is called Elite Glamour.

As a designer, I do graphics and logos. I also design home interior and occasion decor. I also edit film and audio. As an astronaut…I sip tea with Elon Musk and Oprah’s bestie, Gayle (jokes). No seriously, if I’m known for something, its excellence and creativity. From my “intense” poetry to my other crafts, everything I do, I give my all. No half steps or bare minimum. Quality over quantity. I’m free minded and unblinded. that’s what sets me apart.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Knock your little ruby shoes together three times (lol). No seriously, just hit me up via email or Instagram DM. Also follow and subscribe to my blog, She Writes. Add me to your favorites on iTunes. Buy me lunch…I like food.
