Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Schaefer.
Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Nic Nac’s Magic started from my love of helping people and creating calm out of situations that can often feel overwhelming. I’ve always been someone who enjoys staying active, helping others, and finding ways to make a difference in people’s lives.
I realized that so many people have spaces in their homes that become overwhelming—whether it’s because of a move, a busy life, grief, too much stuff accumulating over the years, or simply not knowing where to start. Sometimes people need more than someone to just clean; they need someone who can come in without judgment and help them work through the process.
That’s where the idea for Nic Nac’s Magic came from. I wanted to create a service that helps people declutter, organize, prepare for yard sales, and even handle the yard sale when needed. I also help with hauling away unwanted items and creating functional spaces that feel less stressful and more manageable.
What I love most about this business is seeing the transformation—not just in a home or space, but in how someone feels afterward. When you help take a space from chaos to calm, it can truly lift a weight off someone’s shoulders. Nic Nac’s Magic is about meeting people where they are, providing judgment-free support, and helping make the process easier.
Today, I’m continuing to grow Nic Nac’s Magic and connect with more people in the community. My goal is simple: to help people create more space, less stress, and bring calm to their chaos—one step at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road as Nic Nac’s Magic is fairly new but Starting and growing a small business comes with a lot of learning, especially when you’re building something from the ground up. There have been challenges with figuring out pricing, getting my name out into the community, building a client base, and learning how to balance all of the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that come with owning a business.
There have also been moments of uncertainty and times when I have questioned whether I was doing everything the right way. Putting yourself out there and building something that is personal to you can feel scary. But every challenge has taught me something and helped me grow.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you start. Sometimes you have to take the leap, learn as you go, listen to your clients, and continue improving along the way.
The positive feedback, referrals, and seeing the difference we can make for someone who feels overwhelmed has reminded me why I started Nic Nac’s Magic in the first place. The road hasn’t always been easy, but it has absolutely been worth it, and I’m excited to continue growing and helping more people in our community.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nic Nac’s Magic is about so much more than simply organizing a space. We help people take situations that feel overwhelming and make them manageable again. Our services include decluttering and organizing, preparing for moves or home sales, garage and shop organization, packing, yard sale preparation and management, and helping clients determine what to keep, sell, donate, or haul away.
One thing I really specialize in is meeting people where they are. There are many different reasons a home or space can become overwhelming—busy schedules, major life changes, preparing to sell a home, downsizing, or even dealing with belongings after the loss of a loved one. I want people to know they never need to feel embarrassed before calling Nic Nac’s Magic. We are there to help, not judge.
I think that judgment-free approach is one of the biggest things that sets Nic Nac’s Magic apart. I’m very hands-on and willing to tackle the jobs that people may have been putting off because they simply don’t know where to begin. I can help with just one part of the process, or I can step in and handle as much of it as the client needs—even organizing and running a yard sale for them. Every client and every situation is different, so I try to customize my services around what will actually make their life easier.
What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me. Being invited into someone’s home and helping them sort through their personal belongings is a big deal. Sometimes there are memories and emotions attached to those items, so I never take that trust lightly. Seeing someone go from feeling stressed and overwhelmed to feeling relieved and excited about their space is probably the most rewarding part of what I do.
At the end of the day, our tagline really describes what Nic Nac’s Magic is all about: “Bringing calm to your chaos.” That’s what I want every client to feel when we’re finished.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always someone who liked to stay busy. Sitting still has never really been my thing! I’ve always been hands-on, enjoyed helping people, and had that “let me figure it out” kind of personality. I love meeting people, hearing their stories, and being someone they can feel comfortable around.
Life has also shaped me in ways I never could have anticipated. I’ve experienced a lot of grief and loss, including losing my parents, close family members, and my very best friend, Brandi. Those losses have had a huge impact on the person I am today. Grief teaches you that belongings aren’t always just “stuff.” A shirt, a box of photographs, a piece of furniture, or something that may seem insignificant to someone else can hold an entire memory of a person you loved.
Having personally experienced that has given me a deeper understanding and compassion for people who are struggling to go through belongings after a loss. I understand how difficult it can be to know what to keep, what to let go of, and sometimes even how to begin. There is no judgment and there is no expectation that someone should simply be able to get rid of things. Sometimes you need another person beside you who understands that it can be emotional.
Looking back, I think there was always a little bit of Nic Nac’s Magic in me before the business ever had a name. I’ve always wanted to help people and make difficult situations feel a little more manageable. My own experiences—both the good ones and the painful ones—have helped shape the heart behind this business.
Today, I get to take those parts of who I am—being active, compassionate, hardworking, and willing to jump into situations that may feel overwhelming—and use them to help other people. For me, Nic Nac’s Magic isn’t just about organizing someone’s home. Sometimes it’s about helping someone take the next step during a really difficult chapter of their life.
