Life & Work with Nikki Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Davis. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Nikki Davis

Originally from North Carolina, Ya Girl Nikki is a seasoned radio professional with over 18 years of experience in the industry. She graduated from Person High School in 2002 and pursued a bachelor’s degree in Communications at Winston-Salem State University. Beginning her career as a mainstream hip-hop radio intern at 102 Jamz in Greensboro, Nikki quickly advanced through the ranks, working across diverse markets from New York to Atlanta.

In 2020, Nikki departed from her role as the host of a top-rated afternoon show at Power 98 in Charlotte, following what she believed to be a divine calling for a more positive and hopeful direction. Recognized as the 2018 Radio Personality of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters, Nikki’s influence extends beyond the studio. Her Level Up and Learn campaign has distributed over a thousand books to at-risk youth, while her mentorship program has directly impacted the lives of young girls in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. Additionally, Nikki is a published author, sharing her journey as a mother battling postpartum depression in her book “It’s in the Juice.”

In addition to her radio endeavors, Nikki is well-versed in online promotion, serving as the head of social media for Grammy Award-winning artist Anthony Hamilton and his label My Music Box, a division of Sony/BMG. In 2023, feeling compelled to return to radio, Nikki embarked on a two-week water fast to seek guidance from God. Following the fast, a timely call from a friend, Jbo, presented an opportunity at Boost Radio in St. Louis, Missouri, a commercial-free Christian hip-hop station promoting positivity and hope. Nikki’s faith guided her decision despite initial hesitation, and she accepted the challenge. Today, Ya Girl Nikki can be heard alongside her ministry partner Nteg every weekday morning from 5 am to 10 am central time, syndicated in six major markets with the flagship signal out of St. Louis. Together, they spread messages of pop, hip-hop, and hope to a nation yearning for the love of God.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The current challenges I’m grappling with revolve around the distance from my village. It’s tough being away from the familiarity and comfort it provides. My daily routine involves working from 5 am to 1 pm and full-on mommy duties from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Yes, I’m an early sleeper; morning shows demand resilience. Waking up at 3:30 am to prepare for the day is part of the routine. Some days are more challenging than others, but every moment is worth it. Nteg often jokes that I don’t know how to switch off. It’s true—I come from a family of workaholics. However, through therapy, I’m gradually learning the importance of self-care and taking mental breaks. I urge you to do the same. Make it a priority to replenish your cup as frequently as possible!

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Morning show host for Boost Radio. You can listen live if you’re in STL at 95.5, and you can DL the free Boost app. Event host voiceover talent Social Media Manager for Grammy award-winning singer Anthony Hamilton

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve never been one to shy away from taking risks, especially in my radio career. I’m a bit of a risk-taker, a bold stepper of faith (laughs). I thrive on doing things that make people raise an eyebrow and think, “She’s crazy!” It’s a label I’ve grown accustomed to over the years. However, perhaps the biggest risk I’ve taken recently was uprooting my family from North Carolina to St. Louis to pursue God’s vision. Stepping into the unknown is daunting, but it’s fueled by faith. As the saying goes, faith as small as a mustard seed is all needed as we journey with God. Our blessings, talents, and gifts are meant to serve the greater purpose of spreading His kingdom and helping others along their walk with Jesus. So, take a risk today, knowing God has covered you.
