Life & Work with Sarah Shaw of Joplin, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Shaw.

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Where do I even start with my story?! It’s been such a journey from there to here! I graduated college in 2008 with a Biology major and DECIDED I WAS going to go into pharmaceutical sales. I landed my first job right out the gate and thought that was my forever home! 4 years into it there was a company restructuring and I was laid off..this was the first of MANY layoffs I would experience and I realized this was the life of the pharma industry.

Fast forward 10 years later I got pregnant with my son and wanted nothing more then to stay home with him and my oldest daughter. The push for me to get back to work was REAL and fight or flight kicked in for me to find alternative income to stay home with my 2 kids!

I’ve always been drawn to creating art..imagining..building..crafting..designing..watching my vision come to light. So in my panick I connected with a girl from  high-school who owns YingYingYing shop in St. Louis. It was Jan of ’19 and I started picking her brain on how to build a following on social media-specifically Instagram and where to even start…and there my first collaboration blossomed! I started off modeling some clothing in exchange for product. After that post went live I had an Amazon seller reach out and ask to do the same and thus the cycle continued.

The first year was EXTREMELY challenging…sooooo many late night hours went into building my community (some days were 16+ hours days) and I really wasn’t quite sure how I envisioned this new journey for myself.  I only received products that first year and half and then one day I was offered cash to post, and they were going to pay me $10. I was SOOO tickled to have my first paying job, that I didn’t care about the amount or the fact that I was investing tons of energy, boat load of money, and time into something that to others looked like a hobby.

I can’t exactly remember when the shift was, but I think it was around the Fall of ’19 when I started getting a steady flow of brands reaching out to me, I started getting recognized as a top content creator for several of the PR companies that I have worked for and the jobs kept paying more.

NOW, this past year in 2021 I have just over 20k followers and I’ve worked closely with some top national brands to create videos and still images for their marketing purposes! Companies I’ve worked with: Loreal Paris, Google, Kellogg, Walmart, Sonic, Pampers, and Target just to name a few! Some days I wake up and ask if this is real life!
This past year I’ve started to help individuals and small businesses RUN their social media channels. I have worked with several local businesses and influencers and have increased traffic to their page, created content, and helped them create a schedule that will optimize traffic!
For the longest time I was very lost and confused on what I should be when I grow up. Social media is kind of my jam and I’m SOOO glad I FINALLY found my purpose!

Life is truly a gift, remember that!
Love and Light my friends
Xxx Sarah

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No! It was sooo hard starting out! I had no idea what I was doing and I kept investing money in bogus courses on how to be an influencer.  I spent alot of time and energy into learning a DSLR camera and invested in a quality piece for content! Learning to deal with Karen’s and Trolls was challenging. Another aspect people don’t think about is how much time and effort that goes into each piece of content we create .
The late nights finishing assignments before deadlines.
Your likes, comments, shares, and interactions are what make creating content FUN! So interact with your favorite creators! Also I don’t know how many times I hear how awesome is that. You get to watch Netflix everyday and make money…quite the opposite! I spend every bit of 30 hours a week reaching out to brands, applying for jobs,  and negotiating contracts. This does not include the hours it takes to do content shooting, editing,  and research that is done each week honing my craft! I’ve also struggled with burn out a few times. You ride these really high waves when it’s good, but then you get hit with not wanting to be creative, questioning your content,  and questioning your everything! It’s normal, find others you can chat with to talk you through it!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Im a content creator I’m known for helping businesses and other creators grow their social media pages. I’m also known for my love for fashion, beauty, and travel! So that is what you’ll find when you visit my page.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I really want to focus on building a team of social media gurus. Have an expert in photography,  copy writing, website/graphic designs, etc. I also see this industry EXPLODING in revenue growth year over year! I see shopping pictures as the biggest change! Social media is not going away and I’m here for it!  It is a beautiful blessing to have the freedom to work remotely and I want nothing more than to keep creating all while making genuine connections! 100k followers would be nice to 🤣
